This evening, we hold our Annual General Meeting at Ashby Lane (8pm, be there or be square!). If any of you reading this know me, you'll know that I brought my son up ten years ago to join. It was an unnerving experience for me; I didn't know if I would know anybody and whilst children can usually integrate well into new situations, for parents it can be a little bit more intimidating. At that time, the catering for minis and juniors was the responsibility of the parents; so each week a different age group would be in the kitchen, dishing out the bacon sandwiches, pouring the coffees and making sure that the hotdogs were ready for when the players came in at the end of the session.
This was a fantastic way to get to know the parents we would be spending years on the sidelines with. It also meant that on those freezing cold days, the absolutely soaking wet rainy days or the days where the wind seems to be coming straight from Siberia, we were thankful for the opportunity to stay in the clubhouse.
Once we returned after COVID, it seemed to be a far more mammoth task to attract volunteers - even though we had, by then, garnered outside catering and no longer needed to put in a shift in the kitchen. Now, we need help with some simple tasks, such as directing the cars in the car park on match days, or help on the bar, for example. It need not be a lot of your time, nor does it need to be all on your shoulders. The more of us there are, the better.
If you would like to know more, please do ask us, and help us to keep our magnificent club running for many more seasons to come.
