Lydney Ladies 2s took on Old Bristolians 4s at home on Saturday in what turned out to be a good natured game despite Lydney dominated from the outset. In a match that displayed some of the most flowing play of the season so far, Lucy Smith, with her admirable work rate, repeatedly defeated the opposition to move the ball up the left and into Lydney's attacking D where Captain, Cindy Jones, leading by example, slammed a precision ball into the goal to take Lydney into the lead.
The Old Bristolian attacking moves that made it through the Lydney midfield were confidently repelled by Bailey Ward who continues to grow in strength in defence since her move up from the 3s. With this support on the right, Ali Bannister was able to move the ball up the pitch, working closely in triangles with Cindy Jones, who yet again got the ball into the opposition D where Sian Heaven was able to capitalise with a goal from short-range tucking the ball neatly behind the keeper.
The opposition retaliated making advances towards Lydney's goal but these were repeatedly interrupted by the excellent interceptions of Iza Eaves and Kate Macaskill. Macaskill held the defence well and made perfectly timed and paced clearances up the line, finding Vicky Fear, who's skilled crosses resulted in another goal for Lydney when Ruby Hill, playing outstandingly out of position upfront, scored her first goal of the game with an impressive dive.
Throughout the game, polished defending by experienced players Jane Box and Debbie Legg, kept OBs out, with Jane's trademark, powerful long hits penetrating their defences time after time and allowing Ruby Hill and Cindy Jones to score another goal apiece. The final score was 5-0 to Lydney, but also ten out 10 for teamwork, a high work-rate and solid, passing hockey from every member on the pitch.
...except perhaps for Emm Keer in goal, who hardly had a reason to touch the ball but who's half-time advice helped Lydney keep a clean sheet.
Player of the Match was Ali Bannister
Thank you to Marcus Jones and Andy Lord for umpiring, to Gary Hill for running the sideline and to our loyal supporters and members of the club who came to support; we really appreciate it.
Next Saturday Lydney 2s face Westberries 3s at home at 2.30pm
