Canvey Island and Maldon and Tiptree served up a fine display in frequently wet conditions and in front of a good crowd

Canvey Island FC v Maldon and Tiptree FC Isthmian League Division One North Tuesday October 6 2020

Jammers manager Wayne Brown made three changes to the starting line up from last Saturdays penalty shoot out FA Cup win with Rhamar Garrett-Douglas, Alfie Mason and Aaron William-Bushel dropping to the substitutes bench to be replaced by Niran Butler, Makhosini Ryan-Khanye and debutant Andre Hasanally.

In wet conditions but on a good looking surface both sides took time to settle as both went in search of any weaknesses in their opponents set up. The first goal action saw the visitors Andre Hasanally get in a good cross that Adam Wyse got his head to but could not get any power and home keeper Bobby Mason made the save. The visitors should have taken an early lead when Makhosini Ryan-Khanye put in a great run down the left before playing a great ball forward to Hamza Kaid but he spurned a good chance by putting his shot wide from inside the penalty area. Canvey's Evans Kouassi then featured strongly with a good run down the right before getting a good cross over that was just cleared by the Jammers defence before the same player got over another dangerous cross that Mason Hall headed over the junction of bar and post. Half chances were then created at both ends when Maldon and Tiptree's Kaid expertly slipped a tackle to race down the pitch before seeing his centre just cleared before Kouassi, for the home side, got to the byline before crossing well to find Toby Blackwell but he headed over the bar from a good position. Jammers old boy Connor Hubble then hit just wide from 20 metres before the visitors, with their fine short passing game, take control of the last 15 minutes of the half. The Jammers were again just denied the opening goal when Scott Kemp got good contact to Sam Coombes's cross but a combination of the post and Mason's hand just prevented the ball entering the net at the near post. Almost on time Adam Vyse powered in a free kick from fully 30 metres which Mason could only parry but the loose ball was just cleared.

The second half continued as the end of the first with Maldon and Tiptree dominating play with their passing game in contrast to the home sides long ball tactics which often saw home side possession easily handed back to the visitors. It became only a matter of time before The Jammers profited from their dominance and the opening goal duly followed after 59 minutes when Vyse,s free kick from 25 metres flashed through the defensive wall, across the keeper and finish in the far corner of the net---a goal good enough to win any game. There was still plenty of work to do if the away side wanted to take all three points and this they did well with Billy Cracknell and Martyn Stokes keeping a firm hold on play down the middle and Ryan-Khanye and Niran Butler keeping danger man Kouassi quiet although the home sides hopes were certainly not helped by a second yellow card and dismissal for Elliott Ronto after 68 minutes. Jammers substitute Thomas Stagg soon made his presence felt with good runs down both left and right wings but both times he shot narrowly wide before Kemp almost got on the end of a cross close to goal but just missed making contact before the last 10 minutes saw the home side throwing everything forward in the hope of getting a goal but their approach of long high balls into the box did not really pay off and it was Kouassi, from the left who produced the most danger but his excellent crosses failed to create any real chances as home substitute Louie Hunt saw one 25 metre shot saved then saw another effort go way over the bar.
