UniBond Premier League Champions - Guiseley AFC
By the end of August it looked very much that the West Yorkshire side were heading for a rather average season picking up just 7 points from their first five games. However a blistering September saw them undefeated winning 4 games on the trot to put them in second place.
At the turn of the year Guiseley had added just 10 points to the end of September total as cup fixtures and postponement got in the way. Having played only 16 league fixtures they were already 6 games and 13 points behind leaders Retford United.
At the beginning of March Bradford Park Avenue were looking good at the top of the table with Guiseley 3 games and 12 points behind. The crunch was always going to be the double header over Easter which saw Guiseley at home on the Easter Monday followed by the away game at Bradford. The away game had been scheduled several times from its original Boxing Day slot but as alternative dates ran out there was no alternative to have a massive double header in three days.
First blood went to Guiseley on Easter Monday coming out winners to go top for the first time. The return game at Cemetery Road was a must win for the Avenue but their neighbours were now in top form and left with all three points effectively putting Park Avenue out of automatic promotion.
Guiseley then when all was in their grasp could not stop a defeat at Boston United who were now themselves well in the promotion picture and with a further defeat at Matlock Town, Guiseley good fortune seemed to be running away from the Nethermoor outfit especially when they were also beaten at home by Marine.
The final Saturday of the season saw four clubs all in contention for the title. Boston United knew that a victory at Marine would see them as Champions whilst Guiseley needed a victory and their Lincolnshire rivals to slip up. Bradford Park Avenue and North Ferriby also were in the frame but a unique set of results would only see them as title winners.
Guiseley saw off Ashton United 2-0 but knew that over on Merseyside Marine and Boston were in stalemate at 0-0. Five minutes added time at Marine created a tense atmosphere at Nethermoor until finally celebrations erupted as the final whistle blew in Crosby leaving Boston United not even runners up as Bradford Park Avenue had beaten Hucknall Town to take second slot.
The winners trophy presentation had to go on ice for a week and on Saturday 1st May before the UniBond Peter Swales Memorial Trophy Guiseley lifted the prestigious trophy to be official crowned Premier Division Champions 2009-2010.
