MVCC v Ipsden Match Report

Final over heroics

On an overcast afternoon, MVCC won the toss and put Ipsden in to bat. A first over wicket maiden from Jonny was a promising start, but Ipsden's number 2 and 3 dug in, batting out half the game and putting on 68 before the next wicket was taken. There had been a spectacular catch by Greg off Phil's bowling, but in the series of rolls and somersaults that followed it was unclear if the ball had been grounded. It was referred to Glenn McGrath, who said Greg had definitely had it under control; consequently it was given 'not out' by the umpires.
Ipsden reached 84 before the third wicket went down; after that, the inspired introduction of Greg and Sana led to a middle-order collapse, leaving Ipsden 107-6 after 26 overs. However, a 7th wicket stand of 50 meant that Ipsden finished their innings on 161.
Greg and Jonny took to the middle, needing a rate of around 4.5 runs an over. They scored steadily, and after Greg was out for 10, Pankaj came in and carried on the good work. At drinks, MVCC were 70-1, with the required rate just nudging above 5 runs an over. When Pankaj went for 19, MVCC suffered a little collapse of their own, with Phil H and Qash both going for a duck. At this point, the rate had soared above 6 an over. George and Pete hung around to build useful partnerships with Jonny of 34 and 20 respectively (possibly more or less; quite hard to tell from the scorecard. On which point, whoever does the scoring for Ipsden was worthy of mention for that alone - different coloured pens for each bowler and everything! Always welcome to come and score for us.) Where was I? Oh yes, but when Yarwood Snr strode out to partner his scion and to face the third ball of the 33rd over, it didn't look to be MVCC's day - 25 runs were required off 15 balls. A no-ball and a 4 meant with two overs left, 20 runs were required. Jonny took two off the first ball of the penultimate over, then after two dots, scrambled a single. That left Jim to face the final two balls over the over, both of which were dots. It was then, with one over left and 17 runs needed that something incredible happened. Believing the umpire to have called over, Jim went out of his crease to chat to Johnny, at which point one of the Ipsden players was heard to remark to Jonny 'It must be nice to be batting with your Granddad'*. This so enraged Jonny that in a Stokesian display he dispatched the first ball of the final over for 6 - 5 balls, 11 needed. The next ball was a dot; 4 balls, 11 needed. A scurried two, then a four left 2 balls, 5 needed. An even more scurried two (if possible) meant it came down to the final ball. Jonny (on 94) eschewed the delights of the honours board, instead calmly dispatching the last ball for 4, winning MVCC the game and himself the unquestioned man of the match.

*This almost certainly didn't happen.
