AFC Monton travelled to the Astro turf pitch at Darwen for this First Division Cup semi final and a League double header of 3 points against an experienced Bury FC outfit and managed to return victorious, heading into a second final and a move up the League.
The game was played on an unbelievably small pitch, almost a nine a side pitch which actually suited Bury more than AFC Monton but the Ammies adapted well playing with good confidence from the outset and took a deserved lead after twenty minutes as a short corner found the unmarked Matthew Edge who placed a delicious curling shot into the far corner of the Bury net.
Monton were in command but the home side had two good chances to level the score which they wasted but Monton fought back and Robert Wrigley was desperately unlucky to see his twenty five yard shot bounce off the Bury crossbar with their goalkeeper stranded and the scoreline remained intact until half time.
The second half saw both sides create good goalscoring chances and Monton actually rode their luck on two occasions but with ten minutes remaining a clumsy challenge by a Bury defender saw the Ammies awarded a penalty which would have wrapped the game up but were unlucky to see the shot rebound off the foot of the post. Monton professionally saw out the remainder of the game being able to introduce two rapid forwards to keep the home side`s defence pegged back to secure the victory.
Overall a very good squad performance and a well deserved Final place and three valuable points.
