Full Time Result
Newton Stewart 1 v 0 Creetown
On a glorious spring afternoon for football the home side started brightly looking to assert themselves in this derby encounter from the off. After a bright early period the Creesiders took the lead on 17 minutes when a flowing move down the right found captain Robbie Murray playing a neat one two with Fraser Anderson before he whipped a great ball back across the area to edge of the box which was met perfectly by Marc Whyte who smashed an unstoppable volley into the net to give the home side an early lead. The goal visibly lifted the home side and three minutes later Jack Marshall received the ball wide on the left and the winger sent in a tantalising cross from which Aaron Drysdale side footed a great effort that Dale Leith did well to keep out and deny the youngster. Despite the home sides efforts the visitors were always in the contest and two minutes from the break they were unlucky not to be level when a deep corner was headed back across the box and David Hughes reacted quickest and the hosts breathed a huge sigh of relief when the midfielders effort crashed off the cross bar to safety to send Newton in at the interval with a narrow advantage.
The second half was similar to the first period with the home side pressing and looking to add to their lead without any joy in front of goal. The Creesiders came close midway through the half when defender Fraser Anderson burst into the box before laying the ball into the path of Robbie Thomson and the midfielder produced a pin point cross which Matt Deazeley headed just over the bar from close range. Young winger Matt Deazeley was having another excellent game and minutes later he surged down the wing before finding Robert Hughan who rifled a first time effort goal wards which was well stopped again by Dale Leith in the Creetown goals. With ten minutes left a long through ball found Rory Drysdale who flicked a brilliant ball through to the on rushing Matt Deazeley and he smashed his shot into the side netting to again deny the home side a second goal. With the clock ticking away a quick break found Robert Middleton on his much awaited return after over five months on the sidelines and he released winger Deazeley who was forced wide by the keeper and his shot across goal from an acute angle went agonisingly wide. The home side continued to push for a second goal their dominant display so richly deserved yet full credit has to go the visitors who thwarted the Creesiders front line on numerous occasions as they were resilient in their defensive duties on the day,
We’d like to thank Creetown for a great match yesterday and we now turn our attention to another vital derby with neighbours Wigtown who are the visitors to Blairmount next weekend.
