Creesiders cruise to League Cup win and set up midweek showdown

⚫️⚪️⚫️ LEAGUE CUP MATCH DAY 4 ⚫️⚪️⚫️
Full Time Result
Newton Stewart 6 v 0 Wigtown & Bladnoch

On a beautiful Spring afternoon the home side looked to keep the momentum going as they chased one of the two qualifications places available from the West Zone. The visitors were working hard in the opening encounters , closing the home side down as Newton looked to create opportunities and after several chances went begging they finally took the lead on 25 minutes when from a long diagonal ball into the box Rory Drysdale spun the last defender and rifled a brilliant effort across the keeper and in at the right hand post to put the Creesiders into the lead. Within a minute a looping Wigtown corner was headed back across goal and Franco tried a spectacular overhead kick which wasn’t far away , just going over the bar however within sixty seconds Rory Drysdale collected a pass just on the edge of the area and surrounded by players he turned neatly and smashed a swerving drive through a crowd of players which looked goal bound all the way before young keeper Kenneth Davis scrambled across to palm the shot to safety to deny the midfielder. Wigtown were dealt a further blow 11 minutes from the break when a second yellow for one of their midfielders reduced them to 10 as Newton began to turn the screw as they had started to totally dominate possession at that stage. The home side were looking to pick up the tempo against the ten men and just after the red card Matt Deazeley beat a Wigtown defender to the long cross field ball near the touch line and he fired in a wicked cross that Rory Drysdale met at full pace and he tried to place his header back across the goal with the keeper stranded but he was unlucky to see his effort sneak inches wide of the near post. As the clocked ticked towards the interval Robbie Thomson collected a square ball from a quick throw in and from 30 yards the midfielder picked his spot before unleashing an unstoppable 30 yard screamer which flew into the net to double the home sides lead at the break.

Within two minutes of the restart defender Fraser Anderson picked up a ball just inside the Wigtown half , surged forward then looked up before sending in a precise cross field ball which evaded the Wigtown defences desperate attempts to clear the danger and young Aaron Drysdale blasted a first time side footed volley on target which was brilliantly blocked by the Wigtown keeper to thwart the youngster. The Creesiders were flying at this stage and a minute later a long ball found Matt Deazeley wide on the right and the in form wide man flicked a header into the path of the onrushing Jack Marshall and the diminutive winger smashed a first time strike which again the keeper did superbly to save with his feet. The Creesiders were relentless as they continued to push forward and the visitors bravely repelled their repeated efforts before Matt Deazeley evaded a wild diving lunge wide on the right by the last Wigtown defender and the forward advanced towards the edge of the area before slipping his shot wide of the advancing keeper to score from an acute angle and put the home side 3 up after 55 minutes. Within a minute another neat passage of play created an opening for Robert Hughan and he took the ball in his stride before rifling a superb drive which sailed past the helpless goalie to put Newton into a comprehensive lead with over half an hour still to play. The Creesiders had dominated proceeding from the midway point in the first period and it came as no surprise to the large crowd in Blairmount when with quarter of an hour to go a precision 40 yard pass found Matt Deazeley in space and the winger controlled the ball before sending in another teasing ball across the area which found Robert Middleton and unmarked he headed home to increase the home sides advantage. With the match going into the last ten minutes a corner was whipped in from the left and defender Euan Brown rose highest to power in a header which looked sure to add to Newtons tally however a brilliant goal line clearance denied the substitute. As the game went in to added on time yet another corner from the left this time was only partially headed clear and captain Robbie Murray reacted first to drill home a sixth from 10 yards to seal an emphatic derby win for the home side.

We’d like to thank Wigtown for another great match and all credit to the visitors for battling to the end despite their numerical disadvantage for almost an hour. We now look forward to a midweek trip to St Mary’s to take on Saints in what will quite possibly be a winner takes all encounter in our final Group game.
