SRU President, Colin Rigby, said: “The response to our retrospective caps’ initiative has been heart-warming and a source of great pride, especially for the players and families who now hold that much-cherished status.
Scottish Rugby is now to award an additional 18 retrospective caps.
Former Gala lock Ken Macaulay, later a player and coach at North Berwick, picks up a cap for featuring in a Scotland XV against a French representative side in Bordeaux in April 1980. This was the first match in a tour of three, we lost and coach Jim Telfer expressed his disappointment in his usual forthright manner! However Ken must have played well as he was picked for the next game against the French Barbarians.
Players retrospectively capped from the 1969-1998 era will be invited to a capping ceremony in February 2024.

Johnny Matthews, who became Scotland’s latest cap when he made a try-scoring debut off the bench against Romania last month in the Rugby World Cup, is therefore Scotland cap number 1216. Some of you may remember Johnny from his time as Development Officer for NBRFC, while he was playing for Boroughmuir. We wish him well, although accept that we cannot really claim him as one of ours!
In June 2013 Ken’s invaluable contribution to rugby in North Berwick over the previous 21 years was recognised nationally by Scottish Rugby. At the Scottish Rugby Awards Dinner held at Murrayfield Ken was presented with the Ginger Grouse Spirit of Rugby award.
A big thank you Ken from all past/present players, club members and the North Berwick community in general for your contribution to rugby in the town over an extended period of time, we are all delighted at this announcement.
