Match report

STAINES TOWN WIN THE GEORGE RUFFELL SHIELD
(Report: Thanks to Middlesex County FA)
A sizeable crowd were treated to a highly entertaining game on Tuesday evening. This was the 10th match for the George Ruffell Shield which is played annually between the holders of the Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup and the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup. All proceeds go to the Macmillan Cancer Relief charity. This year’s game was between Staines Town and North Greenford United, who hosted the match. The destination of the Trophy was eventually decided by a penalty shoot out save by Staines Town reserve goalkeeper James Courtnage after the game had ended all square.
The first chance of a goal came in the 7th minute when North Greenford keeper, Gary Jallow made a good low save from Scott Taylor who had managed to get clear of the home defence.
The first Staines Town goal came in the very next minute when a Richard Butler pass freed Leroy Griffiths who scored with a low drive.
Leroy scored his and Staines Town’s second goal in the 14th minute with a lob from Scott Taylor’s pass.
Scott Taylor had a chance to add to his side’s lead in the 25th minute when he again broke clear of the defence but he was foiled by Gary Jallow who managed to gather the ball.
The Swans went 3 – 0 up after 32 minutes. A brilliant multiple passing movement ended with Andre Scarlett pushing the ball to Gareth Risbridger, who converted from close range.
Staines continued to dominate play and a quick exchange of passes between Scott Taylor and Richard Butler ended with another good save by Gary Jallow.
Half time: Staines Town 3 North Greenford United 0
North Greenford came right back into the game in the second half and reduced the deficit after 5 minutes when Sean Hillier’s drive from outside the box took a deflection to beat the diving Louis Wells.
Michael Murray just cleared the Staines Town crossbar in the 60th minute but 6 minutes later Gary Senior flicked Michael’s through ball over the keeper to make the score 3 – 2.
Then, after 72 minutes, Gary Senior headed against the Staines bar from Alfie Patterson’s cross but North Greenford’s equaliser came 10 minutes from time when Staines Town skipper, Danny Gordon, headed a cross into his own net beyond recently introduced substitute keeper James Courtnage.
The remaining 10 minutes produced several good chances at both ends of the pitch but a deciding goal would not come and the match went to penalties.
Score after 90 minutes: Staines Town 3 North Greenford United 3
The first 6 kicks, by Gary Senior, Michael Murray and Jamie O’Connell (North Greenford) and Leroy Griffiths, Michael Kamara and Andre Scarlett (Staines Town) all scored. Then North Greenford’s 4th kick by Sean Hillier was kept out by a diving James Courtnage.
Marc Charles-Smith then made it 4-3 to the Swans and although Nick Turner converted North Greenford’s last kick, Ali Chaaban sealed the win for Staines Town
Penalty shoot out score: Staines Town 5 North Greenford United 4
Referee Wes Linden and his team of Chris Evans, Andrew Hickman and Andy Williams controlled the contest impeccably. Our thanks are also due to North Greenford United for the excellent way in which they hosted the event.
