The Millers welcome league giants Corby Town to Eynsham Park this weekend in gameweek 9 of the BetVictor Southern League.
The ex-National League South-side, nicknamed the Steelers, finished 3rd in the Division One Central last season. After a brilliant year of results, they only just missed out on promotion when they lost to Bromsgrove Sporting in extra time of the playoff-final.
As a special one-off we will be offering FREE match entry to all ex-North Leigh players whether you donned the black and yellow in 2018 or the 1980’s.
Form
Back to back league victories for the Millers have lifted us up to 9th in the table and put the tough September results behind us. With 12 goals in the last 4 games, North Leigh have certainly found their form in front of goal with 10 different goal scorers so far this season. Injuries could plague their chances though with captain Ben Brown and winger Josh Dutton-Black both out for the foreseeable future.
Corby are surely in the form of their life boasting an unbeaten record in the league and come into Saturday’s clash on the back of five successive victories. After a strong 2018/19 season, the Steelmen have bolstered their defence and currently have the 3rd best defensive record which could prove tough for the Millers to break through.
Previous Encounter
Corby Town 5 - 2 North Leigh, Saturday 16th March 2019
21-year-old Jordan Crawford, winner of the 2018/19 league young player of the year, was the hat-trick hero in helping the Steelmen put in a five star performance. But a never say die attitude from the Millers saw them score twice against the playoff finalists, both goals coming from then new signing Tyriq Hunte.
It was this attitude that ensured survival when North Leigh went on a 6 game unbeaten streak following this loss, a run that lifted them to 17th and complete the great escape against all odds.
Did You Know?
The Steelmen, a nickname that derives from the old steelworks located in Corby, once reached the 3rd round of the FA Cup way back in 1965. A hard fought 1-0 victory over Luton Town set up a competition record against then Division Two behemoths Plymouth Argyle. Although there was a cup ending 6-0 defeat, incredible history was made for the club and the end of the season saw the club apply for Football League status which was declined.
