The Millers welcome Hertfordshire-based Welwyn Garden City to Eynsham Park this weekend in game week 12 of the BetVictor Southern League.
The visitors have found themselves yo-yo-ing between steps 5 and 6 of non-league for the best part of 50 years but finally, under the guidance of Manager Adam Fisher, they gained promotion into the Southern League in 2018 for the first time in the club’s history.
Winning the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division with an incredible 100 points in a 40 game season beating fellow promoted side Berkhamsted by 12 points.
Form
The Millers have had mixed form of late but 3 wins from the last 5 is nothing to be dissappointed with. Last time out saw a narrow 4-3 loss against promotion chasers AFC Dunstable and a 3-0 loss to league giants Corby Town. These were either side of a brilliant 3-2 victory away at Aylesbury United. Having now played 7 of the top 9 teams though, a welcome opportunity for a good run of victories is surely going to come knocking.
Welwyn have started the 2019 season with a real point to prove after difficulties both on and off the pitch last season (including a points fine) and boy are they turning heads. Occupying the last playoff place at present, they have picked up 21 points in their 11 games thus far. However a gentle run in for the season has seen them avoid some of the stronger league teams and losses against Coleshill Town and Thame United in recent weeks will make Saturday no walkover against the Mighty Millers.
Previous Encounter
North Leigh 3 - 3 Welwyn Garden City, Saturday 6th April 2019
The exhilarating draw in the heart of the Cotswolds saw our counterparts pick up their 1st point in 7 weeks and end a potentially season damaging run of defeats.
Golden boy Henry Landers was the North Leigh’s player of the match. Scoring twice, first from Noah’s rebounded shot and a second from a beautifully measured free-kick, and assisting the third to Andy Gunn.
If the 6 goals wasn’t enough then an end to end final 10 minutes also saw both teams have a man sent off for poor tackles ensuring the sides finished the incredible game on level terms in all respects.
Did You Know?
Named after only the 2nd garden city in the country, Welwyn were the first football club formed in their name sake town playing their first friendly in September 1921. This is incredible given the fact the first house in the town wasn’t completed until December 1920, some 9 months prior.
