The Millers welcome Bedfordshire-based Barton Rovers to Eynsham Park this weekend in game week 12 of the BetVictor Southern League.
The visitors, similar to North Leigh, have been a staple name in step 4 of the National League having competed in the Southern/Isthmian Division One for the last 18 consecutive seasons but are yet to find promotion to the Premier Division, a feat yet to be accomplished in the club’s 121 year history.
They have been as close as humanly possible though losing out in the playoff finals in both the 2014/15 and 2016/17 seasons. In 2015 they finished the league in 5th place, going on to beat SF Royston Town on penalties in the playoff semi-finals before losing 2-0 to Bedworth United in the final. Then in 2017 they finished a club record 3rd in the league but once again lost 2-0 in the final to Farnborough.
Please Note: We will be offering free entry to all parents of our youth team players plus we are holding our annual Race Night after the match in the clubhouse. The event will kick off at around about 6pm once the visiting players and fans have eaten.
Form
Three weeks without a Southern League fixture have dropped the Millers down to 14th in the league but they jump straight back to 10th on a points per game basis. Last time out saw a comfortable 9-0 victory in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup. Craig and Darren will be hoping that the easy competition and a lack of 1st team games won’t have affected the players’ going into the fixture. Bolstering the squad with two new youth loan signings from League One academies will surely boost the mood in the dressing room.
Barton have been steadily picking up points in the last few months a respectable 8 points in their last 6 games but are yet to hit the heights of years gone by. A 1-1 draw against league leaders Berkhamsted in mid-October will surely have given the side confidence but 1 win in 5 and a 4-2 home loss against Aylesbury United will undoubtedly make for an unpredictable fixture with both sides desperate to push towards the playoff spots.
Previous Encounter
North Leigh 1 - 0 Barton Rovers, Saturday 20th April 2019
Despite staring relegation in the face, the Millers rose to the occasion and pulled out a brilliant 1-0 victory in a much win game in front of a bumper crowd of 142 at Eynsham Park.
Making it 10 points from a possible 12, the win moved them outside of the bottom two for the first time since September, much to the delight of the Managers and it was the season’s wonderkid Henry Landers who scored the only goal of the game.
Did You Know?
Despite a seating capacity of only 160 at Barton’s Sharpenhoe Road ground, their record attendance is 1,900 at the small village side. This was set way back in 1976 when the then South Midlands Premier side welcomed Southern Premier side Nuneaton Borough in the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. What made this fixture even more impressive was that it was Barton’s 1st ever appearance in the prestigious tournament. Along the way they dispatched Cambridge City, Soham Town Rangers and Wellingborough Town to earn the match that saw them narrowly lose 3-2, almost completing a magical cup upset against a team two tiers above them.
