john blower13 Sep 2022 - 19:29

We are delighted to announce our latest member to the club.

Northwich Rugby Club extends a warm welcome to Moss Farm for Martin Austen who arrived early Thursday morning from South Africa.

Martin, 22 year old centre, brings power and pace to the team and was included in the starting line-up for the league fixture away to Macclesfield, where he had an excellent first game, scoring a try on his debut.

He is a graduate of the Cheetahs Rugby Club from Blomfontein, in Natal Provence, and has played regularly for the Springbok franchise at Under 21's level, so joins us with good pedigree despite his age.. He is also a personal friend of Jordan Clarke who persuaded his long time friend to join at Northwich.

Jordan also 22 has a similar pedigree to his friend having been selected for the South African Rugby Schools U18 team, and being part of the South African Lions Squad at U19s.

DoR Postie - “The return of Jordan was fantastic news for the club. The lad has had a taste of level 5 rugby in England now and he`s really grown as a player. Last season was a big leap for him, his performances and consistency were terrific. From that his team-mates asked him to return for another season, which I know meant a lot to him”.

Martin Austen is excited about the prospect of playing rugby in England and is determined to help is new club achieve success during his stay at the club. He said "Jordan left South Africa back in January to join Northwich Rugby Club and we kept in touch throughout his initial time at Northwich. He told me how he was made so welcome by everyone at the club and how he was enjoying his rugby in England."

He added "When he returned to Blomfontein during the English close season, he persuaded me to join him at Northwich. I had no hesitation and when I arrived for training on Thursday evening, I immediately felt at home with all the players making me feel welcome."

Postie said, “I’m chuffed to get Martin. He is someone we identified throughout last season after conversations with Jordan we believe that he could really enhance us. He is comfortable playing in a number of positions in attacking areas and he will excite supporters and add creativity”.
