Nuneaton Borough have announced the signing of Alex Henshall, the versatile midfielder returns to the Club after a spell with Darlington.

Henshall’s 2017/18 season at Liberty Way was marred by a nagging injury that limited him to just eight matches, and included a debut goal in a 4-0 thrashing of Leamington.

In five appearances at Liberty Way, Henshall was never on the losing side as the Boro’ won four and drew once. Alex made 26 appearances for the Quakers last season but now returns to play in the Midlands, closer to his Wiltshire home and young family.

“I’m happy to be back” said the charismatic 25 year old “of course, everything has changed since I was last here. Jimmy, Dale and the team want to go back in the right direction, and I want to be a part of that. I feel like it’s unfinished business for me here. The fans, obviously, kind of, know my story when I was here in my limited playing time, being forced to play through injury etc, but I’ve managed it and adapted and continue to kick on.

“I want to win as many games as possible this season, hopefully it’ll be enough to have us challenging. We know what our aim is, Jimmy, Dale know exactly what they want to do and I’m grateful they trust me to try and do that. The club has changed drastically since Jimbo has taken over and of course for the better, I’m really looking forward of being part of the rebuild, and taking this club back to where it should be.”

Beginning his career at hometown Club Swindon Town, Henshall turned down approaches from Manchester United and Liverpool in order to sign for Manchester City. After loan spells at Chesterfield, Bristol Rovers and Ipswich the pacey winger joined the Tractor Boys on a permanent basis.

A move north of the border to Kilmarnock was followed by non-league Margate, Braintree Town and then the Boro’, two years ago, where he met up with then-manager Tommy Wright, whom he followed to Darlington. Alex also played extensively in England’s Youth set-up, winning almost 20 caps and playing in two major tournaments.

Henshall appeared for the three lions twice in Mexico during the 2011 Under 17 World Cup, where he was part of a squad that included Boro’ teammate Ty Belford, as well as Jordan Pickford, Raheem Sterling and Nathan Redmond. That same year Henshall also played in the Under 17 European Championship in Serbia, playing in all four matches, including ties versus France and the Netherlands.

Welcome back to the Boro’ Alex.
