This Saturday we welcome FC United of Manchester to the LDJ Solicitors Stadium for a 15:00 kick off...
The previous meeting between the two sides ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Boro' at Broadhurst Park. Goals from Jason Gilchrist and Jordan Fagbola had given the hosts a commanding two goal lead before a late consolation from substitute Callum Ball gave Nuneaton a glimmer of hope. That game was also notable as it marked the first permanent game in charge for both Dino Maamria and FC United's Player/Manager Tom Greaves.
With FC United only being formed in 2005 there have, understandably, been just six previous meetings between the two clubs. They have met five times in the National League North with United emerging victorious in the last four. The first meeting was a 2-2 draw at Liberty Way, courtesy of a last minute penalty from Rob Duffy. United Manager, Greaves, had given his side the lead on that occasion, and the prolific forward has recently notched his 100th goal for the club.
Nuneaton's only win against the Red Rebels was a 5-1 victory in the FA Trophy last season. Jordan Nicholson was on the scoresheet that day and his transfer deadline day move to Barnet has, surely, dealt a tremendous blow to Maamria's preparations. After finally having a full squad to choose from and a settled line-up for the first time this season Nuneaton will be forced to make a change and try to replace Nicholson's goals. New signing George Green looks set to go straight in to Maamria's squad. Greaves will also have to make a change as defender Zac Corbett will be suspended after picking up a red card away to Kidderminster recently.
Liberty Way has seen greatly improved performances of late and Maamria has credited the backing of the Boro' faithful, and their fervent support, as a big part of that upward trajectory. Boro' have won three of the past six games at home, scoring 11 times in the process. Although they have had creditable draws away to high-flyers Blyth, Spennymoor and Salford of late, FC United have largely struggled on the road this season. Their only win away from Broadhurst Park came in late August when they beat York City 2-0 at Bootham Crescent.
Greaves is the dangerman for FC United, his eight league goals place him top-scorer for the Manchester side with Connor McCarthy second with five and Steven Irwin third with four. The 32 goals that they have conceded away from home is the second highest total in the league, slightly better than North Ferriby United who have shipped 33. Even if Boro' do have an advantage late in the game, don't count FC United out, they have come from behind to pick up points in six of their last nine games, this one could go right down to the wire...
