Never heard of Allerton Bywater? Well this month we're visiting the last time any Sedge side faced this former Yorkshire League team...

At Open Age level these sides are yet to meet, as the Leeds based side were members of the Yorkshire League before starting 2011/12 in the Pennine. Due to this weekend's double-header we've searched through online archives to find the last time any Sedbergh side faced off against Bywater, from a now defunct website for a Sedge junior side that has been long since forgotten.

Match Date: 19/11/2006
Competition: Yorkshire Combination Youth U18s Premier Division
Result: Odsal Sedbergh U18s 20-18 Allerton Bywater U18s

Report by Aidan Whiting

The day had come, finally, that one thing Sedbergh had been needing all year, something that could spark some life into the rest of the season.. The new kits had arrived. Black, with yellow side-stripe, new sponsor "GAC Logistics", provided by the people of "PSW Sportswear", the cleanest of clean shirts, shorts and socks gleamed on this cold winter(ish) morning.

On with the game, a strong, confident start from Odsal down the hill put big pressure on the Allerton defence. Good ball work near the line just lacking that final touch to get points on the board. Soon after Allerton were gaining more yards, and scoring, creating the feeling it was gonna be "one of those days" again.

A quick 20 metre tap restart saw the first Odsal score, a simple 2 man run created confusion for the Bywater defence, which allowed John Adams “GB” to sprint 80 metres to the line. Dean Graham added the simple conversion. Remainder of the first half was scoreless, ending the half at 6-12 for the visitors.

Disaster start to the second half for Sedji, as Allerton scored from the first set of 6. An easy try from their own half made the score 6-18. That was pretty much the end of Allertons game, as a lack of discipline was the story of the game. The total number of cards shown by the end was 4 yellows and 1 red, Ryan Denton and Duane Platt receiving cards for Odsal.

Craig King’s return added 2 more tries to his on-going tally, with a strong run allowing him his first, the second came from tapping on a kick, and out pacing the Allerton defender. But it was Jonny Ward who grabbed the winner, as a well-timed pass from James Layton allowed Jonny the room to sprint to the line.

17 minutes of pressure on Sedbergh was stuck at well, and rewarded with the first win of the season. New kit.. first win.. coincidence?? Wait and see..
