Tribute and Funeral Arrangements

John was a strong physical openside forward fierce tackler and unstoppable from 5-10 yards inattack. He had the distinction of being made Captain at the age of 21 and was an inspirational leader, often heading the appearance tables, always urging more effort and not shy of letting you know if dropped a ball or missed a tackle this augmented by the booming voice of his father Tom (a founding father of the Club) on the touchline. He was very loyal to the Old Boys and could have had Cheshire honours if he had moved to a larger club
During his very successful tenure several plays were employed new such as the hooker throwing in at line-outs, diversionary codes for our sole jumper ( the legendary Pete Newton), crash ball down centres with back row support and pressure defence. In attack quick feed scrums to move ball speedily to the wings who in one season scored 27 tries each and the team totalled around 900 points for to 100 against in 29 games. Intense on the field he also had a lighter side enjoying a good sing song and bar/drinking challenges with the opposition. He introduced the concept of the Jug Book where details of who & why bought one which was mandatory if you either scored or leaked a try.
Sadly he moved to Harpenden cutting short his captaincy and time with the club although in his last season frequently travelled up each weekend to play. After a couple of years he then moved to Harrogate . He was good enough to play for both towns 1st
XV’s when at Harrogate John Spencer ( England centre) was also playing. He was later years were dogged by ill health and his visits to became fewer and unfortunately was unable to come to the Centenary Celebrations.
He made an enduring contribution to the Club History and is still well regarded and remembered. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family. R.I.P. John

John’s funeral is Thursday Dec 5th at 1.40pm at Stonefall crematorium Harrogate following on to Harrogate Rugby club afterwards.

The family would love to see members of John‘s old club there if anyone can make it.
