Lions end league season with victory

Victory against Haslemere on the last game of the season, our first win since mid-February, was the perfect way to see out the season and confirm a very respectable fourth-placed finish.

Haslemere fought hard, and secured a valuable four try bonus point which gave them a sixth placed finish, crucially leapfrogging rivals Reigate to finish above them for the first time in a decade.

But it was a four try blitz in the first half that gave us the perfect start, and ultimately proved too far for Haslemere to come back from, despite their win against us from well behind earlier in the month.

A Matt Wheeler double, and one for brother Will Wheeler, as well as a first score for a few years for hooker Adam Gilbe, gave us a 22-0 lead after just 28 minutes, as we put together a really impressive attacking display on what was a beautiful sunny day.

Haslemere got a score a few minutes later, but debutant Ethan Williams scored early in the second half with a classy finish to effectively wrap the game up with half an hour to go.

And though Haslemere would get those three tries that bagged them the bonus point, Williams’ second was enough to see us home for a 36-26 win that avenged our defeat to the same opposition three weeks before.

It leaves us with a fourth placed finish with nine wins and seven defeats, a solid showing overall, especially at home where we won six of our eight games.

There is plenty of work to do to make us the force we want, and expect, to be as a club, but with such a young squad this year has laid the foundations for what will hopefully be an exciting decade for the club.
