Rishworthians let slip a great opportunity to give themselves more chance of Counties 1 Yorkshire safety at their bogey club.
With only one win over the Leodiensians over several years, the visitors looked to be in command at 12 – 5 in the second half, but then their game started to go to pieces.
They could do little to please the referee and gave away too many penalties allowing the Leeds side to kick four of them to ensure victory.
As in the past it was a pretty dour game between the two sides and knock-ons in the early stages denied tries for both teams.
Rishworthians took the lead, running a clearance kick back. Hunter Jackson-Sullivan burst through and fed flanker Jacob Bower, who was outstanding throughout, for the first try. Steven Scott converted.
Defence from both sides was solid, with James McHugh and Billy Smith leading the tackle count for the visitors.
It took an interception near the Rishworthian line to provide an unconverted try for the home side.
Just before the break Logan Ward was yellow carded for a high tackle, closely followed by one for McHugh for pulling down a maul.
The visitors weathered the period and took charge early in the second half. Two breaks from Bower gained good field position. They put the home line under pressure and Nick Faulkner, Will McLaughlin and young winger Harry Greenwood all went close.
They stretched their lead from a scrum, McLaughlin feeding scrum half Luke Sutcliffe before the ball went to wing Oli Marshall who squeezed over in the corner.
From the restart however Rishworthians’ game began to crumble and penalties started to flow. Four in kickable positions allowed Leos to creep up to a five-point lead.
Near the end the visitors appeared to score in a mass of players, but after a long deliberation the referee ruled it out and they had to settle for a losing bonus point.
The Development team had a fine 10 – 5 win at Roundhegians thanks to tries by Ted Battye and Lucas Fearnley.
DoR COMMENT
It was incredibly hard to take, we where by far the better team on the day however things don't always go your way and the result with it. We will aim as a coaching squad to put it right this week and I'm sure the lads will relish the chance to put it right with this weeks fixture against West Leeds becoming a high stakes game.
Harry Greenwood came into the team for his debut for the club and had a really good game. He is a very good home grown player and will hopefully start again this week.
