Centre back Nick Wood joined Ossett Town this summer from Mickleover Sports in the Evo-Stik NPL Southern Division, making his debut in the opening home game this season when Town beat Ramsbottom United 2-0.
But that was not the first time he pulled on the red shirt as Nick, younger brother of Charlton Athletic star Richard Wood, was an Ossett Town junior from the age of six. He spent three successful years playing for the clubs junior sides before, at the age of nine he was snapped up by Sheffield Wednesday.
At the Owls, Nick worked his way up through the academy and signed his first professional contract with the club. He made the bench once for the Hillsborough outfit before moving on to Tranmere Rovers.
At Prenton Park he had a little more success, involved with the first team week in week out, often on the bench, he finally got his breakthrough as the regular centre half suffered an injury. Wood impressed during this time, the side keeping a number of clean sheets, but the manager selected the more senior defender when he was fit and Wood was left to sit on the bench as the side when on a poor run before the manager left the club.
Wood made 12 appearances for Tranmere before moving to Mansfield, but injury put pay to his time in the professional game. Wood had two seasons with Mickleover Sports until leaving this summer.
Away from football Nick works at Highfield special needs school as a teaching assistant, this involves working in the brand new fitness suite that has been built there. In his free time Nick enjoys a round of golf as well as keeping fit by getting out and about cycling.
Wood is confident of a good season this year at Ingfield, he admits it has been a difficult start but recognises Craig Elliott has put together a strong squad and expects results to improve as the players get to know each other.
Nick has already scored this season, and is keen to get a few more, as well as adding to the clean sheets already achieved at home to Ramsbottom and again last weekend against AFC Emley in the FA Cup.
