Caernarfon Ladies completed their Premier league campaign with a convincing win at home against a gallant Pencoed, travelling squad.
Sadly this season, amid the much publicised growth in women's rugby, some teams plying their trade in Wales's foremost league have opted not to travel North to honour fixtures. Such apathy needs to be addressed quickly if women's rugby is to be taken seriously.
The Cofis got off to a fine start with aggressive fullback Beth Davies scoring from a quickly taken tap penalty before doubling the Cofi lead when hitting the line at pace from 40 meters and adding the conversion.
Molly Shuttleworth then created the gap for Rhodd Parry to run in from distance with Beth Davies again converting. The game then went out of the visitors reach with two tries in quick succession, Teleri Davies charged before freeing Iona Evans to weave her way to the try line with winger Grace Johns then breaking from deep along the touchline to score. Beth Davies added the extras to the former.
Second row, Nia Galea and Number 8, Emily Hughes worked hard to try and establish an attacking platform for Pencoed but continuity could not be ensured. One turnover within the home twenty two led to a breakaway giving Rhodd Parry her second try of the afternoon again converted by Beth Davies to give the Cofis a half time, thirty eight points winning tally.
Caernarfon had the slope with them during the second half and with an ever tiring Pencoed outfit, were able to run in tries to seal a comfortable victory. A chip through by Iona Evans was pounced on by Beth Davies to start the collection of second half groundings with Evans then sprinting clear to score her second of the day minutes later despite the valiant effort of Pencoed winger Rhiannon Thomas to halt her progress.
From the restart the ball was fielded by prop Gwenllian Pyrs who charged down field, brushing would be tacklers aside to score from sixty meters. Minutes later a similar surge by Pyrs was the catalyst for Molly Shuttleworth to round off a good overall individual performance with a well taken try of her own. Beth Davies added three of the four second half conversions on offer to secure her a personal tally of twenty nine points.
Pencoed to their credit remained competitive in the tackle area with Sam Galea tackling strongly in centre field throughout but try as they did, they sadly failed to register a consolation try that their efforts had deserved.
