On Wednesday the 1st XV travelled up to a sunny Rubercrumb at Loughborough University to kickstart their season in BUCS Midlands 1A against a strong 3rd XV, who have just come down from North B. With a game well attended we went to work in a league that we have set our own expected standard. We found out the level very early on when conceding at a compromising time. In all accounts, it was not a vintage first half by the clubs standards, but in time we grew into the game and started feeling comfortable playing own own brand of Rugby. Our first try came from Kit Buchan going over, which was converted by Joe Hunt. Our fightback came to the forefront in the second half. It began with Loughborough scoring two quicks tries, from there we flew unanswered. Quick tries from Ed Berridge and Josh Harris sparked our anticipated comeback. A nice pattern of play drew a nice attack with a strong Sam Dapz touching down from close out. Building on that confidence a lovely drop of the shoulder from Joe Freeman going down the blindside left the Loughborough defence flat footed in shock touching down finishing a lovely threaded run. Our final try, that was converted by Joe Hunt, came from another cannon run from Sam Dapz, going over to finish off a slightly disappointing afternoon that was full of positives and gave us a lot to build on as the season progresses.
