On Sunday 1st Oct, Paddock Wood FC U18 Rapids entertained Heathfield & Horam Lions at the Elm Tree in the Crowborough League U18s Knockout Cup.
On a fine morning, the visitor kicked off and took a lead after 14 minutes with a shot from the edge of the box in front of goal. 0-1. Dan J was unlucky not to get an equaliser after running on to a through ball and scoring only to be ruled offside.
Midway through the half the Lions doubled their score with a header from a corner. 0-2
Early in the second half, Heathfield added two more goals in quick succession. 0-4. The away side nearly added a fifth a few minutes later but was ruled offside.
Paddock Wood continued to battle but with a four goal advantage the visitors were playing with growing confidence. They added further goals on the 65th, 76th and 84th minutes. 0-7.
Having got to the Cup semi-final last year, it was disappointing to go out to a lower division side in the 1st round. The home team were missing several defenders and struggled to hold a consistent defensive line giving the visitors time and space on the ball. There were some good runs going forward but there were hardly any shots on goal.
Players should not be despondent. Last week the team played well against Oxted, the undefeated League leaders, and know that they can produce better performances. The players showed their passion, they just need to stick together and results will go their way.
Next game is at home to Wateringbury in the League on Sunday 8th October, 9.30am ko.
