Our History 164 years in the making

Peebles County Cricket club is one of the oldest cricket clubs in Scotland dating back to 1857.

1857- 1900

Unfortunately the early parts of our clubs 164 year history is shrouded in mystery with knowledge gaps as to the origins of the club. One possible theory is its origins lie with the Ballantyne family, who were and are a prominent family in the area and built a house which is now a prominent hotel near the cricket ground.

The first documented reference of the clubs existence comes from The Peebles Gutterbluid Club dated 1869

24 July 1869 – A cricket match was played this day between Peebles and Penicuik cricket clubs, when the Peebles Club, although newly begun, gained a complete victory.

11th September 1869 – This day the Peebles Cricket Club went to Penicuik to play a return match with the Penicuik Cricket Club, when the Peebles club were again successful in gaining the victory over their opponents.

The first score card the club has on record is from 1879 against Innerleithen a thrilling draw in which Peebles posted 64 -4.

20th Century

Peebles joined the Borders league in 1906 winning it in 1909

Although a low point came in 1929 when we were wound up over mysterious unpaid debts. However the club was soon back in the 1930's.

Around this time we believe our most famous player represented us David Ballantyne, who in 1936/37 represented Scotland.

From 1927 the club has good records of its fixtures

The club survived during the Second World War and played fixtures throughout the 1940's.

In the 1940's & 1950's the club was run by the Ballantyne and Thorburn families who were mill owners in the town. They supplied several players to the club during this period, both family members and employees.

1960's

1970's

1980's

Peebles were blessed in this era that Maurice Gordon became associated with the club, Maurice held various roles over the years he was associated with the club including Scorer. He kept detailed meticulous scorecards, reports and wagon wheels from the era. These are on display in our pavilion.
