As the bad weather continued to hit the west coast on Saturday, both teams agreed to switch the third round Cumberland Cup game to Frenchfield Park as the pitch their was playable.

Whitehaven Miners battled extremely hard in the first half, limiting Penrith AFC to one goal whilst entertaining spectators to some great free flowing football and frustrating their opponents from the Northern League.

In the second half, Penrith, who had been without a game for two weeks due to postponements knocked it up a couple of gears and ran out 4-0 winners. A brace from Jake Smith, one for Ric Faustino and a fine volley from Bonny Blues stalwart Will Paul put Penrith into the last sixteen.

After twenty minutes of frustration and solid play from the Miners, Penrith went 1-0 up. Martyn Coleman lost his defender and squared the ball to energetic midfielder Ric Faustino who slotted the ball home.

The Whitehaven team then had a great shout for a penalty which was dismissed by the referee. Penrith looked for their second with numerous chances but seemed to have lost their shooting boots and went in at half time with a 1-0 lead.

Penrith rediscovered their recent good form in the second half and were 2-0 up after 47 minutes after an exquisite ball in by Faustino was met by the incoming Will Paul.

Jake Smith put the Bonny Blues 3-0 up with a simple tap in after miners keeper could only parry away a great shot from Cameron Wilson. Smith then got his second of the game and put Penrith 4-0 up on 64 minutes with a good headed goal from a corner.

In the closing minutes Coleman was brought down for a penalty but failed to convert. This summed up a frustrating afternoon for the Penrith striker who wasted numerous chances and the game finished 4-0.

Penrith manager Matt Henney summarised his teams performance "Today I thought we approached it in the correct manner but seemed to slip into some sort lethargy as soon as the game started. Before the game that was my biggest worry. I got the message across to my lads that it must be approached as if it was a northern league fixture.

Henney continues "In the cups it's the result that's vital and progression, we have certainly played better but it's job done. Whitehaven came and had a right go, they had a great shout for a penalty and a couple of other good scoring opportunities that they failed to take. The second half was how I'd expected my lads to control the game but credit to Whitehaven miners, they played the game in the correct manner and looked a useful outfit. Credit to them and I wish the players and management all the very best."
