It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Thomas at the age of 42. Dave, the beloved son of Des and Di Thomas, was a cherished member of the Pirates rugby family. Starting with the club at just six years old, he progressed through the ranks to the Colts, playing as part of a talented and dedicated team. Together, they achieved remarkable success, culminating in a memorable run in the National Cup in 2000.
Dave’s exceptional skill as a scrum half earned him a place at Colston’s School in Bristol, alongside several of his fellow Pirates. At the time, Colston’s dominated college rugby, winning six consecutive Daily Mail Cups. In the final that featured Dave, he was remembered for making what many consider the finest (and some would argue, only!) tackle of his career—a testament to his wit and determination on the field.
Dave’s talents were widely recognised, leading him to join the London Irish Academy and the First XV at St Mary’s University. There, he earned a reputation as the best passing scrum half among a highly skilled team.
After completing his studies, Dave pursued his passion for fitness as a personal trainer. In later years, he served with pride in the London Fire Brigade, a role that exemplified his dedication to helping others. He settled in Bournemouth with his wife Alex and their two beloved children, Maisy and George.
Dave’s enthusiasm was infectious. He competed in bodybuilding, loved mixed martial arts, and carried the spirit of a Pirate throughout his life. He will be remembered not only for his athletic achievements but also for his humour, warmth, and the lasting bonds he formed with his teammates and friends.
The funeral for Dave, who will be deeply missed by all who knew him, is to take place at Treswithian Downs Crematorium, Camborne, on Monday 2nd December, commencing 10am. There is a Plaque Dedication at Penzance Fire Station and a wake will then follow at the Pirates clubhouse from 11am.
