A rare draw....

Percy Main Amateurs and Gateshead Reserves shared a point apiece thanks to a couple of well taken penalty kicks for either side within a 5 minute spell near the start of the second half. Both sides were looking for a positive result in their endeavours to finish the season on a high and on reflection a draw was probably a fair result. Gateshead looked a fit and well organised side and the result extended their unbeaten run to 6 games and took them a place behind Percy Main in the table with a game in hand.

The opening exchanges saw Gateshead goalkeeper Udi Ugochukwu the busier of the custodians as he firstly held an effort from The Main's Ian Dunn and then saved from Suaibu Nkuriza who had looked to profit from a error by visiting defender Dan Ord, but it was the visitors who came closest to taking the lead just last the quarter hour mark as Dan Cranston played in Harry Outterside down the right, who centred for Jack Burn and his effort was somehow scooped from the line by Main goalkeeper Shaun Backhouse. It was one of those that the referee might've wanted to check VAR to see if the ball had crossed the line, but sadly.......

Other first half action saw the visitors Jack Warrington cross into the danger zone, to which Cranston and Corey McKeown had attempts, but once again Backhouse was equal and Jordan Dobie blazed over the angle when well placed, following good play by McKeown. In between a well measured free kick taken by Percy Main's Mark McDonnell almost reached Kieran Tubman.

The game burst into life after the interval as The Main's Dunn was upended by Ord on the area and McDonnell converted the spot kick to put the home side in front. Gateshead almost hit back immediately with a quick break which saw Warrington round Backhouse, but Dale Johnson made a last ditch clearance to avert the danger, which turned out to be a brief stay of execution for the Percy Main.
As Gateshead pressed, the scores were level on 54 minutes as Dobie was fouled by Celso Anjos in the area and Dobie himself got up to despatch the resultant penalty.

The rest of the game saw chances at both ends to which neither side were able to make count. For Percy Main, Tubman, Anjos, Dunn and Nkuriza had attempts at goal, but possibly the best chance fell in the 68th minute as Nkuriza crossed deep into the area and substitute Ryan Laws, who had only been on the field for a couple of minutes, headed inches past the post.

It certainly wasn't all Percy Main and the visitors Konstantinos Dabizas saw his shot blocked from Cranston's corner and The Main had a definite let off in the 75th minute as Najiih Hassan miscued and his shot flew across the face of goal.

Killingworth away on Monday night (tomorrow!)
