Back To Winning Ways

On a crisp morning at Caldicot RFC, Pontypridd Schools Under 11's faced Newport in an exciting encounter.

Newport SRU A’s 20 v Pontypridd SRU A’s 60

Pontypridd started the game strongly, with Dafydd Evans showcasing his skills early on with a great kick return and catch. Gwion Davies got an early turnover, and Morgan Davies showed his strength with a strong clear out at the ruck. Despite some early handling errors, Pontypridd quickly found their rhythm.

Newport's loose pass was pounced on by Ollie Davies, who showed impressive pace, running in from halfway to score the first try. 0-5. Pontypridd continued to apply pressure, with Riley Button making a key tackle and Ollie Davies securing the turnover. However, Newport's resilience paid off, and a determined leg drive through the defence leveled the score at 5-5.

Pontypridd regained their momentum, improving their speed at the ruck and ball movement. Crisp hands across the line allowed Riley Button to score, restoring the lead at 5-10. Pontypridd started to keep possession a lot better, then Ollie Davies offloaded in the tackle setting up Riley Button for his second try, extending the lead to 5-15.

From a lineout, Jonah Probert carried strongly before tipping the ball to Ollie Davies, who sprinted away to score, making it 5-20. Jonah Probert then delivered two great moments with a huge tackle and soon afterwards a well read interception, sprinting 40 meters to score and extending Pontypridd’s lead to 5-25.

Riley Button made a great low tackle on a big Newport runner which stopped a potential threat, while Jacob Atkins made an excellent turnover, which set up Pontypridd’s next opportunity. Some fluid passing by the team saw the ball move wide to left, and back to the right, before Dewi Thomas finished well to extend the lead to 5-30. Before halftime, Newport managed to score, closing the gap to 10-30.

The second half started with Seb Morris making a key turnover and Morgan Davies continuing to do the "dirty work" in the rucks to maintain possession. Pontypridd’s phase play began to click, and Dafydd Evans exploited a gap with a well-angled run, racing away to score. 10-35.

The offloading game continued to flourish, with Pontypridd keeping the ball alive effectively. Riley Button capped off a brilliant team move with another try, pushing the score to 10-40. Dylan Jones’ solid tackling and Jacob Atkins carry and clever offload to Gwion Davies set up a fantastic solo run from Gwion, who scored from his own half to extend the lead to 10-45.

Newport responded with some sustained pressure, earning a try to make it 15-45. But Pontypridd quickly regained control. Morgan Davies made a turnover, and Ollie Davies’ pinpoint pass found Dafydd Evans, who sprinted over for his second try. 15-50.

Newport scored another well-worked try to make it 20-50, but Pontypridd’s forward power and backline accuracy proved too much for them.

A series of hard carries and sharp passing allowed Dewi Thomas to burst free for his second try, stretching the lead to 20-55. Ollie Davies wrapped up the game with another powerful run to score, sealing a convincing 20-60 victory for Pontypridd.

Newport SRU B’s 15 v Pontypridd SRU B’s 45

From the kick off both teams showed their intention to play running rugby and Newport had the best of the early exchanges, however some strong defensive play from Ponty and a slick turnover on our own line gave the backs some space to move the ball quickly to Max Lucas who made a great break before putting Noah O’Flaherty away in the corner to open the scoring.

Some strong phase play and very slick handling from the whole team allowed Jayden Wills to double Ponty’s lead shortly after, however, Newport refused to crumble and halved the deficit immediately from the re start when they caught Ponty napping with a quick tap penalty.

That try gave Newport a boost and they pushed hard for an equaliser, but more determined defence work by impressive captain Sam Roberts earned a turnover that Ponty exploited. Two quick passes from the base of the ruck found Max Lucas in a little space, and he showed a clean pair of heels to the entire Newport team as he raced the length of the field to score a fine individual try.
Ponty stretched their lead further following a strong run from Logan Watts that created space for Phoenix Bestwick to exploit and finish in the corner.

Newport still refused to fold and a slick blindside move put their winger into space for what seemed like an inevitable try - but a length of the field chase by Noah Dollman and a try saving tackle was a fitting end to a fine first half performance from the visitors.
Half time score Newport 5. Pontypridd 20.

The second half started with more Ponty pressure, and a line clearing kick from the Newport outside half went straight to Noah Dollman who showed his pace to round the Newport defence and score in the corner and make the score 25-5 to Ponty.

Newport showed their heart and threatened a comeback by scoring two unanswered tries to reduce the deficit - but hat trick tries from Phoenix Bestwick and Max Lucas sandwiched by a try from the excellent Caiden Owen finished the game at 45-15 to the Visitors.

This was a great team effort and the attacking skills and defensive determination showed by backs and forwards respectively was impressive.
