1st’s rack up 60 against Broughton Park whilst the Wolfpack go down to a “strong” Collegiate side

Prenton 1st XV vs Broughton Park 2nd XV

Prenton came up against a Broughton Park side that were in a similar position in the league so were expecting a tough test. As it turned out Broughton Park could not live with the pace and power of a fired up Prenton side.

The first half started quietly with Prenton taking the lead through two penalty kicks from Harry Walker. 6 – 0

On 25 minutes Prenton won a scrum on the 22 then a blind side move saw Curtis Robb touching down wide. A sweetly struck kick from Harry added the extras. 13 – 0

Almost directly from the restart a scrum set inside the Prenton half, scrum half Harry saw a gap and took his opportunity. Firstly, stepping the winger on the outside and then the full back on the inside, he ran in from 60m to score under the posts making his own kick much easier. 20 – 0

Seeming to have the game totally under control a missed tackle in midfield let Broughton Park in for a score.

Half Time - Prenton 20 Broughton Park 5

The second period started brightly with Dylan making a great break but unfortunately knocked on in the tackle. From the subsequent scrum, one against the head, saw Harry breaking the line and feeding Captain Jack who stormed in from 50m. Sorry, I meant 5m! Harry converted. 27 – 5

Confidence growing Jay Gale picked up a long kick and set off on a mazy run before finding support, after countless off-loads the ball found its way to Evo who went in from 30m dragging 3 defenders who were clinging onto his back. Harry converted. 34 – 5

By now, the offloads were all connecting and once again Harry took advantage, breaking two tackles to go over in the corner. 41 – 5

We were soon on the attack again after Evo hacked on a loose ball, at full speed, he put the ball through another good kick but sadly lost control on his third attempt. He did however, secure the ball by dropping on it (or was he taking a bit of a rest?). J
Jake Moss looked as if he was in but held up short, the ball was taken on by Captain Jack who scored under the posts. Harry converted 48 -5

From another scrum taken against the head, Jay Gale stepped inside to feed Jack to score the “jug” try. 55 – 5

At this point, safely ahead we relaxed a little and let Broughton Park in for a couple of scores. 55 – 17

Not wishing to finish on a low, Prenton had one last chance to score. Quick ball from a scrum on half way saw MTH go through a gap in the defence and a long, accurate pass put Jay in space to race down the touchline to score in the corner.

Final Score - Prenton 60 Broughton Park 17

Overall, a very satisfying and richly deserved win that the team should be very proud of.

Tries: Robb, Walker (2), Evans, Mason (3), Gale
Conversions: Walker (7)
Penalties: Walker (2)

Collegiate 2nd XV vs Prenton 2nd XV

The Wolfpack travelled to Collegiate with a full squad of players, which given the circumstances during the week was no mean feat, newly appointed skipper, Shay and team manager Gareth did well to organise this. Collegiate who sat bottom of the league had somehow mustered a strong squad with some very experienced players from within their club.

Collegiate started the very well and within a few minutes from kick off were awarded a penalty within the Prenton 22 and duly converted. Throughout the first 20 minutes or so the more experienced Liverpool side dominated Prenton and by minute 25 found themselves 17 points to the good.

At this point with a little reshuffling by Shay and Gareth Prenton settled and began to give the Liverpool side a fixture by pulling a few phases together and entered the Collegiate half. This period of play culminated in a try for Prenton via new winger Max Bradley, unfortunately Ben Povall was unable to convert.

Minute 30 Collegiate 17 Prenton 5. Shortly after the kick off Collegiate conceded a penalty and to ensure Prenton remained in the ascendancy it was decided to kick for the points, unfortunately the ball fell short.

Half Time – Collegiate 17 Prenton 5

The second half saw a much-improved performance from the Young Wolves under the leadership of Shay and Gareth and the veteran lieutenants in the form of Chris Chapman, Matt Reeve and Rab Hanna. However, given the experienced side that Collegiate had and some dubious decisions the home side forged on and scored another 25 points in the half.

Prenton Wolfpack never gave up and as in the first half played some good rugby and at times looked the better team on the pitch. Any neutral watching this fixture would probably agree that the scoreline flattered Collegiate a little.

All in all, a bitter pill to swallow by the young wolves, however there is improvement week on week and with key players returning from injuries and work commitments in the coming weeks this youthful band of brothers will soon achieve a string of wins and climb the league table.

Final score Liverpool Collegiate 42 Prenton Wolfpack 5

Tries: Max Bradley
