Bury proving too good for local neighbours

Bury welcomed neighbours Wyke to Asa Briggs as part of the pre-season, the visitors looking to prove a point following their undefeated season and promotion to Division 1 last time around. Despite missing a handful of key players Bury fielded a strong looking team, as the squad fought for first team shirts for the upcoming Premier League campaign. Bury won the toss and elected to play down the slope in blustery conditions, the first 5 minutes hard and fast as both teams made light of the difficult conditions. Bury looked slick and strong and a storming run by returning prop Arran Moore scatted the defensive line before showing deft hands to put through a supporting Tom Hainsworth for the opening try. Wyke were finding it difficult to contain the speed of the hosts and before the quarter hour mark Hainsworth burst the line running over the Wyke fullback. A quick play the ball and Jonny Norman sped through for the second converted score. With no quarter given Bury continued to pile on the pressure and after the half hour a jinking run by captain Callum Murgatroyd exposed gaps in the defense and the score became 18-0 to the hosts. Indeed Bury were unlucky not to add to the tally but infringements at the play the ball kept the score down.
Playing against the wind and up the slope i the second stanza didn't seem to affect Bury, and they camped for long periods on the Wyke 10 metre line. Only scrambling defense kept Bury from adding to the score. After 55 minutes Wyke took advantage of 4 penalties on the bounce, driving down the pitch and taking a well-worked try under the posts to reduce the deficit. This only served to spur Bury on, and within 5 minutes an excellent move saw Henry Houson score in the corner. Wyke simply had no answer to the class of the rampaging Bury offence, and another well-worked move saw Tom Hainsworth hand off the defender to score again. The move of the match followed, the impressive Robson Moore bursting through the line before passing to the supporting Leighton Ruff to take the score to 32-6. With the match out of reach, Wyke took advantage of back to back penalties and a sin binning before scoring a consolation try with 2 minutes to go. With very fine performances across all 17 players, Robson Moore stood out and deservedly won the Man of the Match award. With a rest for the 1sts before the start of the season's campaign away at East Hull in 2 weeks, 2nds are in action next week versus Farnley Falcons.
