Patrick Dyer’s match report from 2nd XI cup game away at Adel last Sunday
What’s even better than playing away at Adel CC? Never playing there again back to back games away at Adel! This was the treat in store for Rawdon 2’s as they had an immediate chance to reverse Saturdays league defeat and book a potential quarter final spot in the Birtwhistle Cup. After early morning controversy 2nd team cup specialist Ian Vinal managed to force his way in to the starting line up with David Thomson mysteriously called away to deal with a as yet unexplained fire incident at DT motors (Vinal’s whereabouts at 7am Sunday morning still to be explained). Rawdon made their way to Adel CC for the second consecutive day with a determination to make amends for a disappointing display the previous day. After winning the toss Adel elected to bat on the same batsmen’s paradise that had resulted in 266 runs in 96 overs the prior day, and were soon in trouble as Jake Hodges and Ross Jennings again bowled with excellent control. Hodges was the first to strike with Galpin dismissed LBW for 3, and with the wicket of Adel captain to Jennings an over later Adel found themselves in trouble at 6 for 2. A mini recovery was staged by youngsters O’Sulivan (22) and Harrison (19) but Rawdon continued to keep the pressure on and the dismissal of both batsmen left Adel at 44-2 from the opening 20 overs. The opening burst by Rawdon was then well supported by the miserly spells of Smith (9-3-14-2) and “off-spinner” Jake Walker (9-2-12-2) with Adel slumping to 85-6 with 8 over remaining. Despite a late recovery Adel were finally bowled out in the final over for 121, with Elliot Audlsey the last man to depart to a stunning catch at Midwicket from Mark “the cat” Stringer. In reply Henry Scanlan fell early for 1 to give Adel a glimmer of hope, but they hadn’t counted on captain for the day Stow stamping his mark on the game. Batting with a fluency that escaped Adel and Rawdon’s batsmen over the previous 2 days, Stow set about chasing down the 122 run target, supported at the other end by Rawdon’s wicket keeper Dyer. With relative ease Stow and Dyer moved the score along to 78, before a rush of blood from Dyer saw him bowled for 19. Stow continued on, and it was a surprise to all when he was dismissed for 75 with only 10 runs for victory remaining. Stringer (7 not out) and Hodges (12 not out) saw Rawdon over the line with 7 wickets and 11 overs remaining. A comfortable victory in the bag Rawdon 2’s now progress to the quarterfinal away at Olicanians on Sunday 26th June, a second cup victory in 3 years now only 3 wins away.
