Our first game since December 5th pitched us up against league leaders Boro Rangers at Eston. The squad was a bit threadbare due to departures, work commitments, suspension and injury. A nice pitch at Eston but it was extemely soft underfoot.
Boro Rangers put us under pressure in the opening minutes but we defended resolutly and suprised the hosts in the 8th minute when Kyran Clark outpaced the defence and saw his effort blocked before DANNY PUCKRIN steered it past the keeper. More was to come when in the 10th minute a shot from GAV JACKSON took a wicked bounce and went over the home keeper.
We had to defend for long periods for the rest of the half however we looked dangerous on the counter attack and almost went 3-0 up but a shot from Danny Puckrin was blocked.
Unfortunatly with us having such a long lay off and a paper thin squad today, it was inevitable that fatigue was going to play a big part. However we managed to hold our lead up to half time.

It was absolutly vital that we kept it tight during the opening 15 minutes of the second half and frustrate the home side and then try to attack them on the counter. Wether it was our lack of fitness, concentration or a combination of both, we went out and did exactly the opposite . We made mistakes and it cost us dearly. We didnt play at all for the first 15 minutes and found ourselves 3-2 down. We responded well but only after we had gone behind. We played some really good passing football but we didnt have the legs to get up and support Kyran who was having a man of the match performance up front. We went close with 10 minutes remaining when Ryan Jennings struck the post. Inevitably when your pushing up you leave holes at the back and we were caught on the break despite Dale managing to push the shot on to a post they got a tap with their player looking yards offside.
It was dissapointing to lose a 2 goal lead to the top of the league, and obviously fitness and a thin squad were contributing factors but we have to be a bit more streetwise and a bit more resilient. We allowed ourselves to be bullied in the opening period of the second half and it cost us dearly. Having said that it was difficult and no one would fault anyones effort today.

Man of the Match for us – Kyran C. (Worked hard up front.)
2 – 0 lead at half time when we had the breeze behind us, we looked comfortable after goals from Puckers, a cool finish after Kyran had been tackled at the edge of the home team box and the ball fell to Pucks. 2 - 0 a short time later when Gav shot from the edge of the box and the ball took a wicked bounce and over the home keepers shoulder. (But if you don’t shoot, you don’t win prizes!!)
We had other chances when we were catching Rangers on the break, but failed to capitalise. Harry had a penalty appeal turned down, as he was given off-side. Dale made a couple of smart saves and Rangers hit the bar from a corner.
Half time 2-0 to us. Second half a totally different story......Rangers with the breeze and the bit between their teeth. We were 3 -2 down within 8 minutes, Sam losing the ball just inside our half, the ball finding a forward at the edge of the box and the shot squeezing past Dale’s left hand at his near post!
Then within minutes 2 all as Rangers carved their way through the Newmarket defence and the ball was in the back of our net.
The Newmarket team was now forced back to our 18 yard box, a shot/cross from distance, whatever, caught the wind and caught Dale out as he tried to palm the ball over the bar, only succeeding to palm the ball onto his own goal line for a simple tap in. 3-2 to Rangers.
Now we were behind we could have completely folded but the team started playing again, and we resumed our passing game which worked so well in the first half.
As we searched for an equaliser we conceded a 4th goal, Dale saving the initial shot, pushing the ball against the far post, however Rangers were the first to react, for another tap in.
Ryan J came on for Liam Ball and was unlucky not to score seeing his shot come off the post with the home keeper stranded.
The game ended 4 – 2, and the lack of games probably had a lot to do with the defeat. But after a great first half where we looked comfortable, it was disappointing to lose 3 goals in a daft 8 minutes at the start of the second half, was it concentration, bottle, fitness!!
As Kas said after the match, some players need to do a bit more in the way of fitness AND training is a must on a THURSDAY NIGHT.
Just to reiterate Mal’s text, Training is £3-00 and Match fees are £3-00 (which also pays for a go on the pub’s lotto bonus ball, which the team benefits from) So everyone had a lucky day last Saturday only paying £2-00!!!!
