Match report

On the same night that Renfrew were presented with their Central District First trophy, they also took a step closer to lifting another, after beating Girvan 2-1 at New Western Park. The Evening Times Semi Final was a closely fought encounter, with neither side certain of victory until the referee blew the whistle at the end of the 90 minutes.
Under a glorious sky that was perfect for football, a good crowd turned out to watch Renfrew and Ayrshire District League champs Girvan attempt to reach an end of season cup final. The match took a while to settle down as both sides probed the others defences. It was Renfrew that adapted to the familiar conditions best, and began knocking the ball about with some style. But it was Girvan that took the lead.
With only 2 minutes of the second half gone, Calum Nairn scored with the head from a corner kick. Frew equalised on 70 minutes after Jamie Benton scored from a crossed ball, then took the lead 7 minutes later when Gary McGarroch headed in the winner. Girvan fought back hard and almost took the match into penalties, when Cargill struck over the cross bar from close range.
Both sides matched each other in the scrappy but competitive first 15 minutes of the match. Then Renfrew won a free kick close to the corner of the Girvan penalty area. Hocknull curled the ball to the back post, Ramsay slid in and struck over the goal from close range. A second Frew free kick was saved by Douglas, and the resulting corner was then blocked on the goal line by Greg Gallagher.
As Renfrew began to take control, an 18 yard Jones strike was clipped wide of the Girvan post by the foot of a defender, then Jamie Benton had a well worked goal disallowed for being obviously offside. With the start of the second half, Girvan seemed to have started a fresh and looked much more confident on the artificial surface.
As an early Girvan attack broke down, the loose ball broke for Chrissy Allan on the edge of the Renfrew penalty area. He turned quickly and sent an early warning on goal, but Burgess managed to turn round the post for a corner kick. After the corner reached the box, Daniel Cunningham headed on toward the back post and Nairn headed home.
Michael Mossie then intercepted the ball and ran from one penalty area to the other. He jinked past a defender and attempted a shot from 20 yards, but said defender done well to get a foot in and deflect clear. Girvan were now looking good and producing some good football of their own, but Renfrew still looked dangerous and could easily break forward at pace.
And they did just that when McDaid launched the ball forward into the Girvan box, Zok controlled with his knee before knocking back for Jones who struck inches wide from 20 yards. The equaliser came minutes later when the ball was sent wide to Zok, crossed nicely low to the back post, for Benton to race in, take a touch and hammer home from 8 yards.
Girvan countered with a cross from the left that was headed into the arms of Burgess from 10 yards, but a few minutes later Renfrew took the lead when McGarroch headed in at the back post. Girvan fought back immediately when Cameron forced a good Burgess save from 20 yards, David Cunningham raced in and tried to score from the rebound but the keeper saved magnificently once again.
Patterson struck the post from 20 yards, then a corner into their 6 yard box was struck by Stephen Cargill from close range. But Burgess’s reactions were lightning fast and his side held onto their lead. An Allan free kick was saved, then with minutes remaining, Cargill got onto the end of a corner and sent over the cross bar from close range. It just wasn’t to be for Girvan, as Renfrew walked away victorious.
