RINGWOOD 4-2 FLEET SPURS
BY ANDY JONES
Richard Morse's side got off to a perfect start beating Fleet Spurs 4-2 at the Lane courtesy of goals from Pat Correia (2), Joss Holford and Charlie Hitchings.
Fleet started the game the better of the two teams and within five minutes the hosts had taken the lead through Tom White. The visitors continued to look dangerous throughout the first half with efforts from White and Sam Khera going close.
But deep into first half stoppage time, up stepped, or rather cut -in, Correia. The forward placed his shot into the near corner to take the game level going into half -time.
Ringwood came out with a renewed confidence and just after 50 minutes Holford scored an absolute screamer. A poor clearance from Jack Coleman fell straight to the midfielder who with one touch controlled the ball and on the half-volley fired the ball straight back at Spurs' keeper from within his own half straight over Coleman to give the hosts the lead.
Morse's side looked the better side from here on out but it was Fleet's White who would find the net next. A low drive shot beat Ben Manley in goal - initially the linesman had flagged for offside but this was overruled by the referee who had spotted the ball coming off a Ringwood player - much to annoyance of the home crowd.
With around ten minutes to go, Ringwood's fitness started to show. A tiring Fleet side were unable to keep the home side out and Correia grabbed his second before substitute defender Charlie HItchings wrapped up the three points from close range to send Ringwood into fifth in the table.
Morse will be pleased with how his side responded after going 1-0 down and again when Fleet pulled it level at 2-2. All too often last season the team had been unable to lift themselves up after falling behind, but this victory shows how the team have learned from last year's mistakes and puts everyone in high spirits moving forward.
Ringwood's next game is away to Whitchurch on Saturday 13 August.
