Today was the first scheduled game at Harrow Meadow in two years, back in the summer when Danny H was putting the fixtures together it looked like the pitch wouldn't be ready until now. Thankfully a mix of great weather and good care by Gav and the Parish Council meant it was delivered early, and we've played a couple of times. It was great to be home again after mixed fortune on the road, with injury crises and tough opponents not allowing us to put positive results together.
Tim had a big squad available today with 16 to choose from. Bash returned from his other managerial role with his son's team to try and catch Kris at the top of the scorer’s charts. Most of our injuries are on the mend with the exception of Gav and Ollie who are still some ways away but came along to support. The ultras were out in force with Bantock Whitey Stevie B and Pete Allen in the main stand, crossing swords before the game.
We had a dream start, with Trevor getting on the end of a Jamie cross and heading home. Elliott got a fine second as he burst forward from centre midfield and Tom C found him with a diagonal ball which he finished well. With only 17 minutes on the clock, we paused for Remembrance Sunday and went down to the war memorial to pay our respects. After a poignant (if a little bit difficult to hear) service we resumed. We didn't have quite the same fluency and Lads made some chances. We did grab the third when a soaring diagonal from Kris to Jamie at left wing who then hit a very hard cross that beat the keeper at the back post to make it 3. Tim made a couple of subs at 30 minutes, bringing on Bash and Tommy R. Lads were still in the game and one of their under aged players stepped inside and hit a curler with the outside of his boot into the far corner to make it 3-1.
At half time the game was still in the balance, Lads had the ability to score against us and some good players. Tim made some more substitutions, bringing on Terry and myself and moving people around to accommodate us. The crowd had swelled to over 30 as people came up from the Remembrance service. The early part of the second half was end to end, we created chances and Lads changed their tactics, putting Lego up front. Lads got the first goal, a free kick near the box was well taken over the wall and Rich couldn't keep it out. At 3-2 Lads had a moment of hope but our boisterous home support, led by the ultras, drove us on to create more and more openings. A good passing move in midfield ended with Tommy R hitting a thunderbolt from 25 yards over the keeper's head for 4-2. A fine move started by Matt W at left back through me and Terry and then down the right wing for a cross to Bash whose shot hit the keeper who then hit it accidentally into the net made it 5. Our sixth was a nice finish by Trevor off a good run by Bash.
A good result for us, thanks to Fish's mate Reece for refereeing and played in good spirits on both teams.
