Snatch & Grab

Snatch and Grab win for the newly promoted side.

Read 0 Rolls 2
Rolls welcomed into the squad 2 new signings, George Gregson and Ben Gorman. Rolls also had 4 players missing from the match day squad.
After facing read in the quarter final of the Presidents cup last season Rolls knew they had a hard opener for the new season, so they prepared to frustrate Read and counter on the break.

Rolls kicked the first half off and should have been in front inside the first 5 mins with Spencer Jordan being out through with a reversed pass from Gorman, with Jordan failing to connect with the ball. Read looked rattled and struggled to get into the game in the opening exchanges, with Bailey Coates going close. This early pressure from Rolls deserved a goal and it wasn’t long before they got the rewards with new signing Gorman smashing home a 25 yard pile driver into the reads far corner of the goal leaving reads number 1 stranded. Rolls a goal up and looking good for their lead.
Half way through the first half, Read came into the contest and grew in confidence looking dangerous and keeping the ball, but often with all the possession they had created very little due to rolls being well organised. When they did get chances rolls other new signing George Gregson who as been signed from Barlick town on loan for the season was called into action, producing some superb handling and also a great reaction save from a back post header resulting in the save being headed off the line by Dave Blacklock. Rolls then, should have took a 2-0 lead with that man Gorman smashing a half volley against the Read crossbar. The last few minutes and the flash point of the half came from young full back Lewin for Rolls, who lunged into a tackle inside his box clearly taking the ball first and his momentum sliding into the Read winger. Rolls dismay the ref pointed to the spot, up stepped Reads number 9 thinking surely he will score, whistle blew and Rolls keeper Gregson guessed correctly and saved the penalty keeping Rolls lead preserved just before the half time whistle blew.
A great first 45 mins for both new signings, but as a group the game plan was working and the group were starting to believe it might be their day. If the score line would have been 3-0 Rolls nobody in the ground would argued. Second half Rolls had to be careful with player management with the heat having an impact with players tiring.
Team talk was to stand tall, believe in each other and play in the right areas.

The second half started like the first Rolls creating chances but not capitalising, but it wasn’t long before that man again Gorman pounced on a mistake from the Read back line and fired in to take rolls in a commanding 2-0 lead. This called the Read management to make changes to get back into the game. Rolls re-treated in the shape trying to make themselves hard to beat. Read are on top and looking likely to score only when they get in Rolls keeper, thwarting their efforts with save after save, or coming out for crosses taking the pressure off the Rolls defence. Read just didn’t have the clinical touch and in all fairness, if they were still playing now wouldn’t have scored. Final whistle blew rolls emerged victorious and were good value for their win. Looked well organised, from the keeper to strikers Rolls clearly had a game plan and everyone bought into it and got their rewards.
Great start to the season and now face a home game against Mill Hill. #UTR
