Rolls are up and running in the East Lancashire League following a convincing 9-2 win at home to a depleted Colne United on Saturday. Manager Chris Gaskell made 6 changes to the side that were defeated away at Prairie United last time out, some of which were enforced and some to freshen up things up.

Rolls began the game much the brighter of the 2 sides, but despite having much more of the possession than the visitors, had to wait until the 15th minute to create their first meaningful chance. A move that started at the back with stand-in keeper Aaron Barber, was finished with aplomb from Kuda Chingwaro on his league debut following an inch perfect through ball from Spencer Jordan.

The second goal quickly followed, and when a ball was played into the Colne United box from the Rolls left, numerous Rolls players had a chance to convert but it eventually fell to Chingwaro who finished at the second time of asking to notch his second of the game.

At this point, Rolls were in full control of the game and Scott McArdle and Ben Whittaker were orchestrating much of the home side’s play.

Rolls didn’t have to wait long for a further reward for their dominant start, and following more neat work from Chingwaro and Jordan, the ball was cut back by the impressive Luke Parkinson to Nathan Taylforth, who slotted his first league goal of the season, 3-0.

At this point, it looked as though Rolls were in for a comfortable afternoon, but the away side had other ideas. With the game nearing the half hour mark, a long diagonal ball was loaded into the Rolls box and a mix-up at the back allowed the visitors midfielder to nod home and provide them with a lifeline.

This rocked the home side for 5 minutes and when the Rolls midfield allowed another long ball to be launched into the box, it was game on as another Colne United midfielder headed home in what was a near carbon copy of the away side’s first goal.

However, Rolls composed themselves and began to use the ball efficiently once more, resulting in what proved to be a crucial goal just before that half time whistle, as another fluid Rolls move was finished by Kuda Chingwaro to complete a superb first half hat-trick.

Although the half time score line wasn’t a true reflection of the first half, at this stage Colne United were still in the game and the next goal would prove to be pivotal. However, Rolls were at their fluid best in the second half and quickly took the game away from the visitors.

Rolls’ fifth goal duly arrived within 5 minutes of the restart and following great work down the right from the fast-improving George Lewin, the ball was eventually played through to Nathan Taylforth who lifted the ball over the onrushing keeper to restore Rolls’ 3-goal cushion.

At this point in the contest the away side looked beaten, and, on the hour mark, the home side scored the 8th goal of the game. Whittaker and McArdle combined once more to feed Jordan who released Taylforth to round the keeper and also complete his hat-trick.

The 6th goal allowed Rolls the luxury of being able to enjoy the final 30 minutes of the game and it was evident that confidence was growing.

With 20 minutes to go, Chingwaro was at it again, when he, Kieran Britton and Taylforth combined to release the first half hat-trick hero, who rounded the keeper and finished from a tight angle for his fourth of the afternoon.

But Chingwaro wasn’t done yet, and with 10-minutes to go he saved his best till last!

Following good work from second-half substitute Danny Paton to win the ball high up the pitch, the ball was squared to Britton who played through Chingwaro, to deftly lift the ball over the keeper from well outside the box to complete a finishing masterclass.

With the game coming to a conclusion, the home side were still full of energy and completed the scoring in the dying minutes, when Jordan, who will be amazed how he didn’t end up on the scoresheet himself, played through the impressive Luke Parkinson to calmly slot into the bottom right-hand corner.

At times, Rolls were back to their best and the away side were unable to deal with the way in which the home side moved the ball. It was a performance that went some way into avenging the below par performance the previous week, but tougher tests are certain to follow for the young side.

Neither the 1s or the 2s have fixtures this weekend but both return to league action on Wednesday 1st September with home fixtures against Poppy Mai and iPlay Reserves respectively.
