Pioneers set off in style

Roose pioneers started life back in the local league with a good victory over a young Ulverston side, in good conditions at a sunny Redwaters.

The visitors started strongly and had Pioneers trapped in their own in goal area for three successive sets of six tackles, with fullback Alex Brown having to work overtime to cancel out some astute kicks into the pioneers in goal area.

Minutes later Pioneers worked their way upfield and Brown opened Pioneers account with a nicely taken try out wide, Adam Batty adding the difficult touchline conversion (6-0)
Soon after a good wide shift of the ball saw pioneers centre Cunningham almost cross in the corner, but he was bundled into touch by desperate Ulverston defence from Rowley, John and Mayer.

Roose then increased their lead when Batty snapped up a loos ball and pulled away from the cover in a 50 yard run to the line, he also converted for 12-0.
Shortly after a good drive by Sam Doyle was taken on by Batty and he supplied Cunningham who scorched over out wide for 16-0.
Another strong Doyle Carry saw him bust the Ulverston line before supplying White and his pass found Batty who accelerated away for his second try, he also converted as Pioneers started to pull away at 22-0.

Minutes later Danny White put in one of his trademark crunching tackles, Ulverston spilled the ball and a strong run from Corne Els saw him cross from 40 yards out Batty adding the extras for 28-0.
On the stroke of half-time another strong break from centre Russ Birch saw him draw fullback Rowley and supply Batty and he sped away to complete his hat-trick, he also converted to see Roose go in with a commanding 34-0 lead.

The second half saw the introduction of Jordan Ashton and he didn't take long to open his try account, scooting in after a quick play the ball from Els, converted Batty 40-0.

Ulverston then had a good period of play, with strong running from the hard-working Woodburn, Ventner and High, but it was Pioneers, who edged further ahead with Cunningham adding his second try after some great ball movement 44-0.
Ashton then added his second after a great offload from Corne Els, Batty bringing up the 50 for the home side with the conversion, before turning supplier, hitting Hampton with a wide cut out pass, to see him score in the corner, Batty also converting the score for 56-0.

Ulverston then got just reward for their efforts, fine drives from their pack took them to the Roose line and Coles forced his way over from short range, he also converted for 56-6.
Fine work from the Pioneers pack saw them gain good ground, before a great offload in the tackle from White found Ashton and he scorched over for his hat-trick, Batty adding his 9th conversion of the night for 62-6.

Ulverston, to their credit dug in and finished strongly and were rewarded with a late try from Johnson, who had been busy all night, Coles adding the conversion to see a final score of 62-12 in Pioneers favour.

In a good clean game of rugby league well refereed by Nathan Johnson, Batty took Pioneers man of the match, closely followed by the hardworking Corne Els, and Dylan Tatupu, whilst Ulverston's best were Athersmith, Johnson and Woodburn.
