3rd September 2016 saw the new season get underway. Thirsk made the trip to the welfare ground. Torrid conditions welcomed them along with a team missing five first team regulars. From a Hornets point of view the first half did not go well and saw them go into half time 13-0 down. The errors were identified and the half time team talk taken by Kev Neary and Jono McMillan riled the players and got them playing to the strengths of the day, put the ball in the pack. The second half saw a different Hornets side come out of the blocks. Thirsk giving as good as they got for 35 minutes of the second half saw them on the back foot going into the closing stages of the match. With the weather not letting up, Daniel Newstead run over with the final play of the game, Kai Wheatley converting the try to close proceedings 13-7. A stellar all round performance saw Scott Johnson claim man of the match for the Hornets.
Onto the next match where the Hornets face off against Sheffield Oaks. 15:00 kick off at the welfare 10th September 2016, hopefully the conditions can be better than today.
