Jon Bray captains England Masters to Home Nations glory

Jon Bray captains England Masters to Home Nations glory

Jon Bray12 Jun 2012 - 13:04

Rotherham Hockey Club stalwart Jon Bray captained England Masters Over 45s at the Home Nations in Edinburgh last weekend.

Jon had previously captained the team to Home Nations success in Belfast last year, and following a successful Regional tournament last month, where he captained the North of England to a silver medal, he was selected for England trials and was subsequently asked to captain the team again this year.

England opened this years Home Nations competition against Wales and quickly found their stride going into a 4-1 lead at the half time break. The second half continued in the same vein with England running out 7-2 victors.

Their second game of the day was against Ireland who had earlier lost 2-0 to Scotland. England continued to play open attractive hockey against the Irish and quickly moved into a 3-0 lead. The goals continued to flow with the game ending 6-1.

This left England needing a draw against Scotland on Sunday to retain the trophy for another year.

England again started the game very positively with Scotland struggling to contain a speedy English forward line with Bray and his midfield colleagues providing the ammunition to punish the Scots.

After 15 minutes, England were leading 3-0 but Scotland as expected against the 'auld enemy' were not going to give up hope and continued to battle, especially in front of a large patriotic home crowd.

England however were gaining more confidence from game to game and continued to show why they were reigning champions. Further goals came in the second half with England completing another successful tournament with a 6-0 victory and for Bray to lift the Trophy for a second successive year.

Jon now moves on to the inaugural Masters World Cup which takes place in August at Canterbury where England and the other Home Nation countries will compete against Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Spain, France, Belgium, Switzerland and the USA.
