Truro City 4 Rugby Town 1

Truro City 4 Rugby Town 1

News Admin14 Mar 2010 - 07:48

First ever competitive game in Cornwall ends in sorry defeat. Truro City 4 Taylor (29), Ash (33) Afful (58, 84) Rugby Town 1 Smith (18)

RUGBY Town assistant Michael Love insists both he and gaffer Lee Colkin believe Valley can beat the drop, despite seeing their battle-weary troops blown away 4-1 by Truro City at Treyew Road.

With time ebbing away for Valley to preserve their status in the Zamaretto Premier Division, Rugby’s dire need for points goes on as they slumped to their 21st league defeat of the campaign.

Things started well for Town when striker Greg Smith gave them the lead with a glancing header, before Sam Youngs went close as Valley looked good.

But Andy Taylor hit back for Truro against the run of play, before Jake Ash scored moments later as the Rugby balloon quickly deflated.

Les Afful then made it three on the hour with a superb solo strike, before the same man bagged the fourth late on.

“To be fair, Truro aren’t a bad side but once they equalised, we just buckled,” stated assistant Michael Love. “We’ve had a hectic period where the games have come thick and fast and I think there were a few tired legs out there today.”

“Lee and I still believe we can beat the drop but obviously time is starting to slip away now. We need a couple of quick wins to catapult us back into the mix. But the longer we go without registering points, the harder it’s going to be to avoid relegation.”
