Find out what SULRFC has been up to during lock-down and summer

We would usually be giving you an update now about our triumph at Varsity, and a look forward to the year ahead including preseason - sadly this year we cannot do that. SO, we thought instead we would give you an overview of what SULRFC members have been up to during the COVID-19 pandemic and during summer – if you can call it summer in the UK.

Firstly, we thought we'd have a go at SULRFC Bingo. This involved members crossing off everything they've done linked to SULRFC, we have linked the photo below so you can see yourself how much of a die hard SULRFC member you are!

Later that week we had our current Secretary Dead Blossom run a virtual quiz which she inventively titled, Dead Blossom Quiz. This saw Meat Feast be victorious and prove that she was probably the best at Guessing The Rugby Girl as we went into the archives of our committees old facebook status, telling very telling.

That wasn’t the last of GTRG as our current Club Captain – Scrantander lead a GTRG baby photo feature on our Facebook group. A decided giveaway was when the photo appeared in black and white you knew there was some stand out hair colour.

*Knight in shining armour

Blossom also ran a GTRG, however this time on club members very first Instagram post – this was decidedly harder as till this day there are still many unresolved mysteries as to just who exactly the rugby girl was.

Lock-down also saw the creation of SULRFC’s Got Talent, hosted by our new social secs Daddy and Yogurt. The Talent show boasted physical talent ft a chicken, tiktoks and our winner and outstanding Club Captain Fleshy show off some musical talent. Turns out SULRFC can do more than just play rugby, who knew?

We also experienced SULRFC’s first virtual BBQ – a positive to a virtual BBQ was that the weather couldn’t get in our way. This was a great way for everyone to stay in contact and we played ‘Psych’, the game is sadly no longer free on the app store but highly recommended if it ever is again or you feel like splashing out.

Something written about in our previous articles was the SULRFC to Porec challenge, we successfully completed the distance there and back with two days spare and raised £150 for the Trussell Trust. We also had one day where we competed against SURFC and SURC where each club tried to cover the furthest distance in one day by running, a collective total of over 2,000km was covered that day and hundreds raised for our respective charities.

That was not the end of our fundraising efforts during lock-down however, as we teamed up with SURFC again to raise money for Runnymede and the Bail Project in aid of the Black Lives Matter movement. We hosted a quiz and raffle in June which was a success raising £165 for the charities!

We also had two more quizzes during lock down Wettuces Quiz and the Big Fat SULRFC Quiz of the Year, both were a big hits with a lot of members joining in. Evidently our competitive nature has not dwindled during lock-down, even if our fitness may have.

Lock-down also saw us jump on the tiktok hype. One video was an introduction to our new committee which took an alarming amount of coordination and props so check it out! We also had a go at the Don't Rush challenge where we swapped our rugby get up for something slightly more formal to celebrate when we should have been dressing up for club dinner.

Linking in with the last thing I’ll mention in this rather rambling update, Sports Awards 2020. Again, we weren’t able to donne any gowns or suits this year BUT we were nominated for a record number of awards (including club of the year!).

AND our very own 2019/20 Club Captain Jen Selim (Fleshy Jigsaw) won the Outstanding Contribution Award, this was very well deserved and a testament to the time and effort she put in during her university career to sport at Sheffield.

Hope you have enjoyed this rather long update and can’t wait to inform on more of SULRFC antics soon.

Lots of Rugby Love

p.s. we were awarded the Core Values Club of the Year for the 2nd year in a row by the RFU!
