After a 25 year absence from the Spartan South Midland League, Shefford Town & Campton FC started a new era for the club with a season opening 3-0 win away to Amersham Town. Henry Snee grabbing a hat-trick, but marking a great all-round team performance.
It is a massive 10 days for the club, which 25 year ago ceased to exist. 10 years ago the return story started when a Shefford Town adult team was formed, which a season later merged with Campton FC. Last season the club won the Bedfordshire County Premier League and Britannia Cup double, but this time the club had the infrastructure to take on promotion, returning the town’s football to its former position in the league pyramid in the Spartan South Midlands League.
The management team of Scott “Granty” Grant and Dan “Checker” Gauntlett, with the support of a dedicated committee, have continued to work with local developers and our lead sponsor Warden Developments to ensure the home ground at Shefford Sport Club, first played on only 5 seasons ago, has continued be improved to meet the FA ground grading requirements for Step 6 football. In the past 3 seasons we have provide a paved walkway around the pitch, a pitch-side barrier system and in the past 3 months, with the support of the Football Foundation, have installed a pay kiosk, a 70 person stand and this week we completed the installation of floodlights. Having won the Bedfordshire County Premier League two seasons running, we have definitely earned our promotion.
This Saturday (10th) will see our first home game back in Spartan South Midlands Division 1, when we entertain Wodson Park from Ware, kick off at 3pm, entry is £5 adults and £2.50 concessions (Shefford Sports Club, Hitchin Road Shefford SG17 5JD). Then next Tuesday (13th) will be a historic evening, with the very first competitive game at the ground under floodlights, when we host FC Broxbourne Borough, 7.45pm Kick Off. It would be great to see the people of Shefford and the surrounding village come and support their local team and help continue the success as the club enters a new and exciting era.
