The Shelley FC walking football group began in march 2017 following an initiative by the club led by Gary Millar.
It was aimed at somewhat older participants who would welcome the opportunity to resurrect or continue their enjoyment of the game through a less physically demanding form.
In the early days numbers were small and it was a struggle to continue. Through the enthusiasm shown by members, word of mouth and recommendations, others were encouraged to join. Now two years on we have over thirty names on the clubs books.
Ages range from 50 upwards (we have regular players over 80) but sometimes younger family members or friends join us for a game.
The group play every Wednesday from 11 am till noon on the Shelley FC all weather facility. After the session players retire to the club house for a drink and a chat.
Recently the group entered a team in the peoples FA cup at regional heats in Leeds and there are plans to arrange friendly fixtures against similar organisations.
Apart from the obvious benefits to health and fitness, a great deal of enjoyment comes from the sessions and members see it as a regular and worthwhile sport and social involvement.
