DEEPING RANGERS 2 SHEPSHED DYNAMO 1

DEEPING RANGERS 2 SHEPSHED DYNAMO 1

Shepshed Newsdesk26 Aug 2012 - 12:16

After the fast flowing football of there 3-nil midweek victory it was a back to a spluttering performance and a 2-1 defeat at Deeping Rangers in their UCL match on Saturday.

The Dynamo showed just two changes from the previous match. With Rob McCormick unavailable Jobe Shaw, on loan from Mansfield Town, took the No 6 shirt, whilst Liam Fitzpatrick, recovered from a pre-season leg injury, came in at centre forward for his debut, replacing Justin Jenkins who dropped down to substitute.

A pre-match thunderstorm left the pitch very wet and conditions were not helped when the heavens opened again after just five minutes play.

There was absolutely no question of who was the star of the first half. That honour fell to Shepshed keeper Scott Low who pulled off five or six wonder saves to keep his goal intact.

The early pressure came from Shepshed with Lee Attenborough coming close with a sublime lob shot which went just over the bar. Then in the 11th minute Low took centre stage. From a corner, the ball was only half cleared and fell to Steve Julian whose shot from fifteen yards, and destined for the corner of the net, was brilliantly saved, one handed, by Low as he flung himself across his goal line.

Minutes later another cracking save low down denied the Rangers’ Harry Deane.

Shepshed were finding it difficult to build any pressure on the home defence. On the left Kieran Bradshaw was seeing plenty of the ball but was being blocked when attempting runs down the wing whilst on the other side Kieron Davies was having to come inside to receive any service.

On the half hour Deeping were again open mouthed in disbelief as a wonderful net bound 25 yard effort from Chris Logan produced another one-armed save from Low. This time though the ball fell kindly to Simon Ashton who somehow screwed, what looked a simple tap in, wide of the post.

Midway through the half Fitzpatrick had picked up a yellow card for a strong tackle from behind which upended his opponent on the wet surface. Ten minutes before the break a totally unnecessary off-the-ball bodily challenge incurred the wrath of the referee and it was made obvious that the No9 would not survive any further transgressions

The home side continued to press and a shot by Michael Byrne was saved, by way of a change, by Low with his foot, and the in the dying moments of the half, Low tipped another Byrne effort over the bar. The Rangers came off at the break with there supporters in disbelief that they weren’t at least three up.

Jenkins came on for Taylor at the break to join Fitzpatrick up front and within two minutes Shepshed were in front. A tenacious run down the left by Bradshaw ended with him hitting a low cross into the goalmouth where Nick Jackson, under little pressure, managed to run the ball into his own net. This was the third own goal in two matches to benefit the Dynamo.

Bradshaw was to turn from hero to villain nine minutes later when, just outside his own penalty area on the right wing, he unnecessarily fouled Deane, who was going nowhere, giving away a free kick. The kick found Logan on the far side of the area and he placed an unstoppable shot, even for Low, in the net

The standard of football deteriorated in the second half as play was broken by a series of niggling and petty tackles. Bradshaw picked up a yellow card for another silly tackle, whilst Fitzpatrick, now concentrating on his football, did have a couple of good efforts on goal including one good run which only broke down when Jenkins strayed offside for a one-two.

The winning goal for Deeping came in the 87th minute when the home side was awarded a free kick just outside the area for yet another totally unnecessary foul. In the crowded goalmouth the Dynamo failed to clear there lines and the ball fell to David Burton-Jones who netted.

It could be argued that Shepshed did not deserve a point but it was a fact that they had thrown one away.

Shepshed:- Low, Pritchard, Taylor (Jenkins 46), Marson (Mulonga 88), Attenborough, Shaw, Davies, Cole, Fitzpatrick, Perkins (White 81) Bradshaw. Subs not used Byrne, Simmonds.
