Shepshed Dynamo extended their lead at the summit of the United Counties League with a 3-1 victory away to Peterborough Northern Star.
It was an emotional day. There was a minute of silence prior to kick-off ahead of Remembrance Sunday, and a stillness of time, everybody and everything a statue, more or less frozen in place, save for the group of crows that fluttered around in the air above, and sporting expressions of solemn respect.
The proverbial calm before the storm. Shepshed got off to the most sprightly and auspicious start. Instinctively, and with much equanimity, Harry Wakefield fired a low shot into the net from close range. The visitors led after three minutes.
The frenetic antics of the match showed little sign of abating. Peterborough rallied and responded and netted an equaliser 11 minutes later. Shepshed cleared a free kick. The ball came back. Sam Wilson blasted a sumptuous shot high into the net.
In a game that was fast threatening to become a ding-dong battle, Dynamo almost restored their lead instantly, but John King got in the way of Lewis White's goalbound shot following a corner.
Not that it mattered in the end. With Shepshed's next foray forward, King received possession on the right, gulled his defender with a chop inside, and finessed a low finish into the bottom corner to restore his side's lead.
And he was far from finished. He picked out a pinpoint pass to the back post, and Reece Morris gobbled up the opportunity with much glee in the 25th minute.
Dynamo came close to taking a three-goal cushion into the interval, when Liam Hurst's low drive from White's cross flew past the post on 41 minutes.
The opening exchanges of the second were not much less noteworthy than those of the first. Peterborough's Matthew Cox felled Hurst in the box and the referee gave a penalty, before overturning the decision after conferring with the linesman.
But most noteworthy of all was the Shepshed fans' holding a minute's applause in memory of Liz Anderson, a supporter of the club who sadly died of a heart attack earlier this week. After its conclusion, the chant went up:
"We all love Liz!"
Dynamo fashioned innumerable chances, and Peterborough goalkeeper Dan Swan produced a particularly impressive string of saves to deny King, Karl Whymark and substitute Matt Melbourne.
But Shepshed nonetheless emerged victorious, and they did Liz proud, displaying effort and desire and commitment in spades.
Dynamo remain top of the division as a result of the win - their 12th in succession - and can now look forward to next Saturday's crucial clash against Wellingborough Town at The Dovecote.
