Toolstation Western League Premier Division 12.8.17. Shepton Mallet 0 Cribbs 1

Match Report by KOB

Shepton lost their opening league game at home to Cribbs, beaten by a solitary goal scored after 49 minutes by Charlie Aldom. The sides cancelled each other out in a first half of few clear cut chances. Jack Goodall made a confident start on his debut at full back for Shepton, whose defence also included Cormac Pike who made a number of clearances and interceptions in the opening period. It took Shepton 20 minutes to start creating much, but then a fine Tom Hill pass set up Ash Willmott, and although Rhys Cook could not get enough on Willmott's cross, another flowing move a minute later almost brought them the opening goal. Joe Morgan fed Cook who moved the ball on to Tyson Pollard. who in turn set Willmott up, only for the wingman to squander the chance. Former Shepton player Lewis Hedges saw his shot after 28 minutes blocked on the Shepton goalline, and another good block, this time by James Billing from an Aldom shot, nullified further danger from the visitors . Hill tested his namesake Dave Hill, the Cribbs keeper saving well, and Hill then saved a Morgan header from Willmott's cross just before the break.
On 48 minutes, Billing advanced before sliding a pass through to Cook, who looked to have a good chance of giving Shepton the lead until Hill rushed from his line to make a good save. Within a minute, Aldom punished the home side at the other end, after Pike was beaten in a headed challenge for the only time in the match, allowing Nathan Legge's knock on to reach Aldom, who outpaced Billing before crashing a shot past Easterbrook from 12 yards for the deciding goal. Shepton almost replied from the restart after Conrad Peck put Pollard in, only for Hill to save well. The keepers traded saves in quick succession, Easterbrook from a long range free kick by Ben Dowdell, and Hill from Shepton's Tom Hill, who then put Shepton's next chance well over the bar. Willmott went much closer midway through the half as his strong 25 yard effort went inches too high, and Easterbrook kept Shepton interested in getting something from the game with a save from Dowdell before he then made a superb stop from a powerful Sam Iles shot, tipping the ball onto a post after 77 minutes. Disappointingly, Shepton did not overstretch Cribbs as the clock ran down, their only remaining half chances both falling to Peck with a header that went just wide, and a late scuffed shot after good work from Morgan.
