The 2024/25 season is nearly upon us and with new challenges to face in the Hanham Minor League, Coach Andy got busy earlier in the summer arranging a series of pre-season friendlies to help us get prepared. Here is a quick summary of how we got on.
First up was Port of Bristol. We have now played them about 5 times and on each occasion it's ended in a draw, so the result was written on the wall (0-0 as it turned out!)! However, it was a great game and we tried some different approaches to our formation, and tried some players out of their normal positions.
On a balmy summer's evening last week we (eventually!) arrived at Bocco's home ground near Hanham. The team we played will start the season two divisions above us and despite being low on numbers, and having to retire goalkeeper James at half-time, we put up a brave fight and were unlucky in the second half to concede a few goals. Highlight of the game was a wonder goal from a free kick by Reuben.
Finally, last night we faced Ashton FC, who are in our division this year and we will face later in the season. Again, we were unlucky to concede a few goals and equally unlucky not to convert some of our chances.
However, the results of a draw and two losses are pretty immaterial compared to the things we have learnt playing these games. The players are showing so much more confidence on the larger sized pitches and we've progressed our goal kicks considerably, with us developing our ability to play out from the back. We're also developing some great one-two passing and our moving into space and dealing with the high press are also coming along nicely. Thanks to all the parents that have supported getting the kids to these games whilst dealing with the stresses of school holidays and getting the kids back to school. Also, a special mention to Oliver for stepping up and taking on goalkeeper responsibilities whilst James is injured. We are hoping to utilise a couple of other players in goal over the next few weeks as well, so that we don't miss out on Oliver's defensive skills on the pitch too much!
See you on Sunday, for our first league match!
