Full tilt at Wickwar!!
Wickwar Wanderers 1 – 1 Shortwood United Reserves
Wood Ressies headed to South Gloucestershire to take on an unbeaten Wickwar side. The pitch was in good condition and Wood were treated to some brand new changing rooms (gotta take your boots off lads!!)
The game was played from start to finish at full tilt and excellently officiated by Owen Jackson. Both teams had chances but it was Jake Wellington who caught the eye with a overhead scissor kick that rattled the crossbar. This was after good work down the left from 16 year old Zack Marshfield who fast developing into a quality player. It was Finn Lynam though who broke the deadlock pouncing on a loose ball that had been parried by Wickwar keeper Lee Bindon from a rasping shot from Keegan Bowes. Wood were looking settled and were managing the game will until the otherwise excellent Owen Jackson gave a penalty for handball against Marcus Foxwell – it was a harsh call but the referees decision is final and the resultant penalty was blasted past Ollie Elliott. The next 20 minutes could have gone either way the best chance falling to Jamie Apew, who struck his shot well but was equalled by Bindon in goal. In the end a draw was probably about fair.
As a point of interest the squat little round building behind the goal is a railway airshaft for the 1km long Wickwar tunnel built by Isombard Kingdom Brunel in 1844.
